Arthur Taylor came to prominence in the mid 1950s and is remembered as one the most important drummers of the hard bop and post bop jazz styles. He played with such eminent musicians as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Jackie McLean and Kenny Dorham. Miles Ahead and Giant Steps, by Davis and Coltrane respectively, are just two classic recordings to which contributed.
However, in spite of all this perhaps his greatest achievement is the book Notes and Tones, a collection of interviews with 26 of the most famous jazz musicians of all time. Because of his own position as a jazz musician with a highly successful performance career, Taylor is able to gain a unique insight into his subjects, who include Dexter Gordon, Ornette Coleman, Dizzy Gillespie, Betty Carter and Thelonious Monk, as well as the aforementioned Davis and Dorham.
A must for all fans of jazz literature, this book casts a wonderfully intimate look over the lives and minds of some of the most important artists in jazz history, as well as providing vital clues as to the processes that went into the creation of their music.
