If playing in front of an audience or even just in front of other people is quite daunting to you, there are ways you can ease yourself into this through social or educational settings.
You can look out for Saxophone workshops in your local area, and some Adult Community Learning centres may offer classes.
If you are a classical or general player lookout for local instrumental groups who get together regularly and play as ensembles - great for improving your music reading skills! They will often hold annual concerts.
If you are a Jazz fan you could find a workshop. You will usually learn how to work from lead sheets (these show the melody, chords and structure of the piece). You will also learn about general etiquette of playing and soloing in a jazz group - very useful if you want to take your playing further and perhaps go to a jazz jam or join a band.
If you are a blues fan lookout for blues jams. Basic blues improvising can be achieved by just a couple of simple scales.
I hope that gives you a few avenues to explore.
