My own personal suggestion for beginners is that they get the Learn As You Play: Saxophone book by Peter Wastall, and the Abracadabra saxophone book with 2 CDs. These are great all-round books, with fingering charts, and they take you through all the basic techniques you need to master, as well as providing some nice, short pieces and duets. Learn As You Play: Saxophone is more suited to older children/adults whereas Abradabra is more accessible to all ages, as it focuses on well-known songs and melodies as the basis of learning. I usually use both of these books equally when teaching.
For more advanced players I suggest listening to some great classical saxophone players such as Kyle Horch, Vincent David or John Harle. Having a clear idea of what you want to sound like is very important for learning any instrument. A very useful book that goes into saxophone technique in detail is the Cambridge Companion to the Saxophone, edited by Richard Ingham.
Enjoy!!
