Learning English changed my life. I grew up on the Galapagos Islands and never thought that I would leave. Here I am now married to Katy, a British woman, and living in Chester. I decided to learn English as I felt it would create more opportunities for work and it certainly did. After a couple of months of taking English classes I got a job giving tourist information and through that job I met a lot of interesting people from all over the world. The more I spoke the better I got and before I knew it I was confident and comfortable with my new language and able to converse with anyone about anything.
Katy did not speak much Spanish so my English was essential. I met her family and friends and if I hadn't been able to speak in English the occasions would have been very very quiet! Practice is key and I listened to English music, watched films in English and read books in English. My English is not perfect at all but I can communicate and express myself pretty well, though Katy often corrects me! I correct her too, we speak Spanish at home so she can practise. It was teaching her that made me think I could be a Spanish teacher so when we decided to move over to the UK I spent two months studying in Quito at the International Spanish School.
My tutors and students all say I am very patient, have clear pronunciation and create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in the class. All the students who have taken one class have continued and have been very happy with their progress. Two students spend half the year living in Spain and want to be able to integrate into real life there. One student is building confidence and thinking about moving to Cuba! The ability to speak another language creates more opportunities and enables you to meet new people. It brought me to Chester, with Katy. Who knows where it will take you.
