When I go to work with someone for the first time, there is one thing I want to know..... What type of VAK they are? No, this has nothing to do with cleaning - its a term that indicates how best you learn, and as a tutor. I like to know how that is!

Some people learn by Visual means. This means when you see something, you remember what it looks like. So think of a car, if you see its edges, its colour, the size, the shape, what road it's on? This is you. This means that diagrams will work best for your memory - especially if they are brightly coloured!

Other people are Auditory learners; this means that you learn by hearing. So if you are in a classroom and the teacher is explaining something, you will probably take it in and follow the instructions perfectly. However, if you are given the same instructions to read, you are more likely to struggle and mess up. So, diagrams and notes are not so good for you, but discussion and bullet point lists written by you whilst listening to someone might be.

And finally, the K's- Kinaesthetic learners. You tend to find classrooms the hardest, and are good at drama, music and art as your style involves movement. The best way of working this one out, is what you do when you have to make something, furniture perhaps? Do you read the instructions (visual) or do you ignore them and just use your instinct? For you, we may need to be more creative, to get up and move, possibly use items and sing songs...

So, I always want to know what type of VAK someone is, as this means I can ensure they get the correct help they need from me. So if I ask, I'm not being rude - just trying to help!
