Dorita S. Berger's book 'Music Therapy, Sensory Integration and the Autistic Child' is a superb read, and not just relevant to those with a diagnosis of autism but to all human beings.
Berger manages extremely clearly to describe how humans process the vast quantity of sensory information they receive all day and every day, why apparently 'odd' behaviours are not so odd at all, and how exactly the various elements of music (rhythm, pitch, melody etc) can effectively be used in encouraging the development of new ways of coping and being.
