"Little and often"

These are the best three words of wisdom I have heard during my time as a Brass tutor. There have been so many times when I have asked a pupil how much practice they have done and the reply has been "I did about an hour......yesterday." They then proceed to play the pieces they were set in the last lesson, without having made any progress or it is worse. This is because they haven't done anything during the rest of the week meaning they have probably forgotten what they are doing and everything feels unfamiliar to them. Whereas, had the played their instrument for just 10 or 15 minutes a day, everything would be fresh in their head, and signs of improvement will already start to be showing through.

10- 15 minutes a day, that is all I ever ask of my students when they first start - and I find that it works wonders.
