The very beginning of learning any instrument is the most crucial time of all.

By having indi vidual lessons you can benefit from one to one mentoring and guidance. It is then a good idea to get involved in bands.  For example brass bands, wind bands and choirs to help promote sight-reading, ensemble skills and making more friends.

Regular lessons, usually weekly is the best way to start learning an instrument to keep bad habbits from forming.

This is why it is good to start in smaller groups or individual teaching for the first few months.

Unfortunately bad habits can form almost immediately without proper guidance and it can be very difficult to break them even after a short period of time. These problems can be incorrect breathing, bad hand position and embouchure problems.

If you have decided to change teachers and want more guidance on choosing a teacher please see my article on how to choose the right teacher for you.
