I want to first talk about the Louis Maggio System for Brass. It has been a very useful study for me because it takes into account breathing, technique and high and low registers. Each exercise has been assigned a warm up to them which are explained at the beginning of the book. It also tells you about the correct ways to breathe and to breathe in the Maggio way. At the start of this method, Maggio tells you about the embouchure, the position of the mouthpiece, how to take a breath, relaxing when playing, the upper and lower register, intonation and sound.
The second book is Technical Studies for the Modern Trumpet by the jazz trumpeter Pat Harbison. This also takes into account breathing but it is more technique where this method is useful. At the start of the book, it tells you how to do a good warm up, what happens in a practice session, warming down, breath support, the tongue and the embouchure. It has a section at the beginning where he gets you to play different intervals at slow speeds to determine where the tongue lies in the mouth when you play that particular interval. It then moves onto some more technical work in the form of dorian and lydian modes. Here, you will be playing short running passages that help you getting to know that particular key and which style. You can either play these slurred or tongued and at different tempos depending on the ability of the player.
Both of these trumpet methods are available on the internet or from most music shops and have been a great help to my playing.
