Surrealism and the Female Shoe

Within the discourses on representation, the art movement of Surrealism is the most important concept.

Within this movement, the female shoe can act as a sign of status, intention and possibly the ultimate in surrealist gestures. Over centuries, the designs of this important item of apparel have ranged from being an item of concealment to a means of celebration and of casting aside the past. The female shoe is therefore a fascinating subject to analyse, for its powerful connotations both for its wearers and its admirers.

Psychologists have researched into the hidden meaning of the female shoe, but one thing is clear: a woman’s mood can be determined by the shoes she is wearing. Through semiology and anthropological references, we can analyse the image of the female shoe and its relationship to the Surrealists gesture.
