University English

It is important to write well and read well at higher education level, as well as at lower levels.  Foreign language learners at college often undertake reading and writing exercises to improve their level.  This can include scanning exercises, skimming exercises and intensive reading exercises.  These methods can be applied to any subject at university level.

A lot of the work can be done alone; however, there is often a need for a tutor to set extra work for development.  In terms of writing, the writing can be guided writing with a "writing frame" to guide the student or freer, more creative unguided writing where the student can explore more of his/her creative side.

Reading is a productive skill and writing is a receptive skill.  This also applies to listening, a receptive skill and speaking a productive skill.  The trick is, to get the students to write and speak to the best level they can.  Extensive reading using a library in the college or university or online articles and newspapers is recommended to improve vocabulary and idiomatic structures.
