While some students are natural performers, other students who work just as hard find it difficult to play in front of an audience. The best way to learn to perform, is to perform more. In a one-to-one lesson the student learns technique and musicality, but by practicing performing, the student learns to communicate with the audience, project sound, share their music with the audience and forget being nervous and enjoy performing. It's important to get students to practice performing and in my opinion important for teachers to create opportunities and to encourage students to perform. Teachers, such as myself, can have their students perform in friendly atmospheres infront of the teacher's other pupils, in front of their parents, or perhaps in front of a few of the pupil's friends.
