Violin

One of the first things to realise when starting to play the violin for the first time, or even returning to study after a break, is that playing the violin is a form of physical exertion and it is therefore important to use the body well in order to maximise the sound production and progress made on the instrument. New-comers to the violin can find it very tiring at first, simply to hold the violin in place for more than a few minutes at a time, so I would emphasize the physical aspects of violin playing, of building up muscle strength, and would introduce students to the benefits of Alexander Technique, Pilates and Yoga, which have been designed to increase awareness of posture and the use of the body. I would encourage swimming as one of the best forms of exercise to counteract the strain on the shoulders and upper body when playing the violin.
