For violin beginners, I would like to recommend a particularly good Tutor Book which seems to be relatively unknown in the UK:
It's called Der Junge Geiger (The Young Violinist) by Fortunatow (available on www.musia.de), and good music shops in the UK can order it for you.
It offers a very thorough introduction to violin playing, starting on open strings, then introducing the four main finger patterns. There is a large variety of songs and pieces, mainly, but not only, by Russian composers, and many scales, studies and excercises. The first year (or two) of violin tuition can be based on it, and there are pieces and studies up to about Grade 3/4 standard. However, it covers the first position only, so you would need for example Sassmannshaus vol. 4 or other books to introduce 3rd and 2nd position.
Another excellent book is Violin Playtime Book 1. The Stepping Stones, Waggon Wheels, Fast Forward, Fiddle Time books or the graded repertoire books can (and should!) easily be used alongside for more variety or exam preparation.
