My approach to Voice Techniques

Ever since I was a child I loved playing with my voice and the sounds I could produce. I liked changing my voice, singing, speaking foreign languages, mimicking people’s speech, creating voice characters…

Voice, sound and word have always been a matter of interest in my life and that is why I studied languages, teaching, drama, singing and voice techniques. My journey throughout the world of voice has taken me from exotic foreign languages to radio studios, from mantras to voice therapy, from singing to voiceover.

I think that our voices are powerful instruments of expression and, as such, we can shape them to express beauty, emotion, speech and love. For all of us who have the gift of using it, just think of all the things you can do thanks to it, and imagine all the things you could still do.

Exploring the voice and exploring with the voice can refer both to very social and at the same time very intimate aspects of ourselves, it is our sound to the world, our music to the ears of those who listen.

Voice is actually vibration, which appears to be the very basic element on which the subtle universe is constructed, so if you say you get good or bad vibes this can also be related to voice. Voice is also much linked to our speech and language abilities, so it is related to logic and also to emotion and can be a very powerful tool for soothing, clearing our minds, pleasure, concentration, contemplation and aesthetics. It is our innate way for music, our natural “sound and vibration implant”. So I think there is really very much about it.

Voice is extremely organic and therefore it is flexible and can be widened, strengthened, amplified, modified and also limited, strangled and squeezed. And probably this applies to our minds, our ways of communication and our capacities for self-expression.

In my Linguistic studies I specialised in Phonetics, which is the study of Sound in Human Language, and I was fascinated at noticing how our “speaking machinery” worked so efficiently mostly in an unconscious way. From this very small set of muscles, cartilage and tissue in our throat all singing, language and vibration was originated.

I have had the chance to work with singers, voiceovers, actors, speech therapists, teachers and many professionals related to voice and language, but never forgetting that all those who can speak are voice users and therefore are entitled to enjoy its possibilities and explore where their voices can take them, from speech, to singing to even silence.
