- Personal Message
- I am a highly-qualified Biologist with expertise in Spanish language. I specialise in quantitative biology e.g. experimental design and statistics, in addition to CV-writing/interview skills.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach Biology and Statistics, Spanish, essay-writing, scientific writing, and examination techniques. I also advise on careers, CV-writing, and interview skills.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a PhD in Mammal Biology, an MSc. (with Distinction) in Conservation Biology, and a BSc. (Hons, 2.1) in Zoology. I also have a University Certificate in Advanced Spanish.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have tutored privately, and on contract at the University of Brighton, for the past 6 months. I currently have 4 private students, and 15 University students. I tutor the university students in statistical analysis for biology, and CV-writing/interview skills/job-hunting. I also lead Earthwatch research trips for teenagers and adults to South Africa and Ecuador, and have organised and run after-school clubs for 11-14 yr olds during my previous employment at the Hawk Conservancy Trust.
- How much do you charge?
- My fees vary from £20 per hour at Key Stage 3 up to £35 per hour at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Where students prefer to be tutored at their own homes I charge reasonable travel expenses (e.g. £2/£3), agreed upon with the student prior to the beginning of our sessions. I am happy to tutor small groups of up to 3 students at my home, in which case the hourly rate will be £10 per student for KS3 to A level, and £15 per student at university level. For online/phone tutoring I offer a 10% discount.
- Where do you teach?
- I teach at my home in Brighton and in surrounding areas to a distance of up to 5 miles (e.g. Saltdean, Rottingdean). I can also travel to the student's home.
- When are you available?
- I am available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, between 9am and 6pm.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- Any level in Biology; KS2 and 3, GCSE and NVQ Spanish; University-level data analysis/statistics.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- GCSE, NVQ, A level, BSc, MSc
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I can tutor online via Skype or email. However, I think it works better if we have at least one session in person before starting online sessions.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- The University of Sussex - PhD (Mammal Biology), The University of Reading - MSc (Conservation Biology) The University of Manchester - BSc (Zoology) and The University of Brighton - University Certificate (Advanced Spanish)
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- Don't label yourself, or allow others to label you, as inherently good or bad at any skill or subject. People learn in different ways and at different speeds. We will find a way of engaging with a subject that works for you.

Should we accept the Gaia Hypothesis?
In 1965, physiologist James Lovelock and microbiologist Lyn Margulis proposed an intriguing theory known as the Gaia Hypothesis. They turned the traditional assumption that living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) processes operate pretty much independently of each other on its head. Their theory was that life on earth evolved with physical...
My Testimonials
|
I got in touch with Bryony during my research methods and data analysis module for my MSc. in Applied Sport and Exercise Science. I had never attempted statistics before (or SPSS), and, after an initial meeting, Bryony instantly gave me hope that I could not only pass the assignment but pass it well. - Adrian Ashby |
|
Within just a few days, I was ready to start writing up my assignment and Bryony supported me via email and telephone. She was always there when I had any difficulties and was able to articulate complicated concepts using straight forward language that matched my level of understanding. I never thought that (dare I say it) I might just enjoy statistics! - Adrian Ashby |
|
In summary, a frightening experience made enjoyable by a tutor who displayed empathy, understanding, depth of knowledge, patience and diligence during the biggest academic challenge I have ever faced. Thank you very much Bryony, you are a legend - Adrian Ashby |
