About Katy
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught privately for four years now and have built up a teaching base in London since moving to the city in 2013.
My teaching experience ranges from leading workshops for toddlers and their parents/carers to giving concerts to people living with dementia with organisations such as the Wigmore Hall, Halle Orchestra Family Outreach, Spitalfields Music, Westminster Arts and Open Academy. Last summer I was invited to be a Teaching Assistant for The 30th William Bennett International Flute Summer School alongside Denis Buriakov in Sale Marasino, Italy.
As a performer I am an active solo, chamber, and orchestral musician, performing regularly around the country with Trio Aeolian and my quintet, Cavendish Winds, as well as with orchestras such as the Constella OperaBallet and Orchestra Vitae. This year, my quintet have been appointed Fellows with Wigmore Learning/Open Academy.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes
- Where and with whom did you train?
Whilst studying at the Royal Academy of Music my teachers were William Bennett, Clare Southworth, Kate Hill and Patricia Morris (Piccolo). I have also studied with Ullla Miilmann of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Linda Verrier at the Royal Northern College of Music.
I have worked with conductors such as Edward Gardiner, Trevor Pinnock, David Zinman and Gareth Hancock and performed in masterclasses with Emily Beynon, Katherine Baker, Michael Cox, Aldo Baerton, William Bennett and Paul Edmund-Davies.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
British Flute Society
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I love sharing my passion for music with people from all around the world of all ages. If you would like making music to be part or a bigger part of your life please get in touch!

I am a dedicated and passionate musician who loves to share my experience and enjoyment of music with others. My lessons are tailored to each of my pupil's individual needs so if you have any questions please don't hesitate to get in touch!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I primarily teach the flute as well as offering tutoring in music theory, aural skills, GCSE/A-level Music and chamber music coaching. I am flexible to combine these areas of music education into my lessons (and often do!).
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I graduated in the summer of 2015 with Distinction in Master of Arts in Performance at the Royal Academy of Music. Through the Academy I am also in the process of completing my LRAM teaching qualification.
Before this I graduated from the University of Manchester with a First Class Bachelor of Music (Hons) degree and at A-level I received A* A A in Music, English and Mathematics.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £35 per hour (£20 for a half-hour lesson) and group lessons are available at a discounted rate. There may be an additional cost to cover travel.
- Where do you teach?
My teaching base is near my home in Haringey, and I am happy to travel to: Hornsey, Crouch End, Turnpike Lane, Manor House, and Finsbury Park.
I am a teacher for the Richmond Music Trust on Saturday morning's as well as teaching privately in Putney on a Monday after school and would love to hear from anyone who is looking for a tutor in those areas. I also work for Chelsea Quavers on a Tuesday in central London and have been an improviser in projects with Involuntary Movement.
- When are you available?
My time is often flexible so I am free most weekdays and evenings and can also be available at the weekends. I am also available during the school holidays, so feel free to get in touch and I'm sure we can find a mutually convenient day and time.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach any age and any level - my pupil's ages have ranged from 4 to 64! All you need is enthusiasm and willingness to learn. For younger pupils aged 6 or under I recommend starting on the recorder due to the flute's size.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Flute lessons: I can prepare students for graded exams and diplomas should they wish to take them. I can also help students prepare for concerts, auditions, school exams and competitions.
Tutoring: I can help prepare students for their music theory/aural, GCSE and A-level music exams, as well as offer guidance for university interviews.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Online tutoring is mostly suited to older students but can be an extremely valuable teaching tool. If you are interested in receiving tuition through Skype then please do get in touch and we can discuss practicalities depending on what subject you would like tutoring for.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Katy is a fantastic teacher who manages to make lessons really fun and engaging whilst also making sure the student understands about technique, musicality and theory. My daughter always looks forward to her lessons and has made consistently good progress over the last year since Katy started teaching her. I would not hesitate to recommend Katy as a flute teacher.
