- Tell me about some of your current students.
- INITIALS HAVE BEEN USED TO ENSURE ANONYMITY D, Lewisham, preparation for QTS skills test. L has already secured job and desperately needs to pass test in order to be paid as a qualified teacher. B, Bexleyheath, aged 10, preparation for the 11+ in Bexley. N sometimes panics and when she does this, I make funny sounds including mooing like a cow when she's concentrating hard. This helps to relax her and make us both laugh. H, Victoria, aged 10, preparation for independent schools in Central London and local state schools. B, Charlton, aged 10, preparation for the 11+ in Bexley, has the grooviest hair, and when I greet her on a Saturday at midday it always looks like she's just rolled out of bed; her curls standing on end. I love her hand me down t-shirts from her older punk loving bro. S is smart, works hard and finds the weirdest things funny. When she doesn't know something she looks me straight in in the eye and when I raise my eyebrow, she mimics me and shakes her head from side to side. L, Catford, aged 15, preparation for Foundation GCSE. P needs a C to pursue his career as an electrician. He has a good grasp of most topics but needs a lot of support with the basics: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. V, Woolwich, aged 15, preparation for Foundation GCSE. A has trouble with the basics of maths and I work hard to strengthen his grasp of the fundamentals. M, Eltham, aged 10. Supporting S prepare for the 11+ Bexley and 11+ Kent Tests. I quote S as saying "I learn more with A in an hour than I do at school in a whole week". Surely, I can't be that good! I guess we work well together. He is making fantastic progress. R, Sidcup, aged 10. G is working really well and is acheiving her class targets. She is making steady progress in preparation for Bexley 11+ next year. A, East Ham, aged 10. A is so much fun to be around. Her enthusiasm for maths bowls me over sometimes and because she is enjoying it so much, she has learnt much. She has now been moved up to the top group. Well done A! Y, Blackheath, aged 10. Y sometimes finds it difficult to concentrate but now with sustained focus she is able to hold numbers more easily in her head. Her parents and I have noticed a marked improvement.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- Why I tutor? I love what I do. I get to hang out with children. We learn maths together. I am as good as I am, thanks to the children – they’ve taught me everything I know. It sounds cheesy but it’s true. I’ve been able to find out how they learn and in turn, impart this knowledge to the next children I tutor. As a result, I’m constantly learning new things and expanding my reportoire of methods. I also love the fact that each child is different. Each has their own quirky personality. I’ve met all sorts of children so far. From bubbly to shy. From funny to quiet. I have a strong bond with many of the children. I try, nevertheless to nurture each child and I take their wellbeing very seriously. Tutoring can be incredibly positive but with little consideration for the child’s self-esteem it can be equally negative. I read lots about education with particular emphasis on home education and maths education for young learners; in fact I’ll be starting an MA in Maths Education at the Institute of Education this September. What I’ve come to learn from tutoring and from my reading is that good teaching doesn’t always equal good learning. Whilst I think I’m the man for the job, it’s not because I’m an expert at maths or at teaching it, it’s because I place a lot of emphasis on your child’s mood and energy levels.

I am very happy to strongly recommend Adrian Beckett, who is providing 11+ maths tuition for my 10 year old son Jude. Jude's mother, myself and Jude have found Adrian to be an excellent tutor. He is very personable and affable, and is very good at engaging Jude. He shows a good understanding of Jude's maths needs. Jude has responded well (much better than when I tried to provide some maths guidance!) and has has made marked progress in a short time. - Martin Anson |

Adrian started tutoring our 10-yr old son only recently, but we have already seen results. J's confidence has soared and, above all, his enjoyment and satisfaction with the subject has increased. I love to hear J muttering aloud as he does the exercises Adrian sets - he becomes totally absorbed with the challenge and it makes a refreshing change that he's not trying to get out of doing his homework! I have great faith that J now stands an infinitely better chance of achieving a scholarship in maths. - Meriam Soopee |

Text message from 10 year old W: "Hi Adrian. it's W. I got into all of my schools. I am going to Queensgate because it's my favourite" - W (aged 10, had a great collection of rubbers) |

After three 1.5 hour sessions of Maths tutoring with Adrian I passed the Numeracy QTS Test first time! I was very impressed with Adrian's approach, we worked through specific areas of Maths that I found difficult and he showed me techniques that simplified the question and made it quicker to answer. These techniques will also prove invaluable in my job as a primary teacher and, through my increased confidence, I hope the children I teach will have a more positive attitude towards Maths. - PGCE Primary Trainee Teacher |

I feel a lot more confident now. I´m starting to enjoy Maths at school. - J. (aged 15) |

After a few sessions with Adrian, I was able to gain my confidence and face my fears of the QTS test. Adrian is a fantastic tutor, his approach I have noticed was to build my confidence by showing me what I could already do. I now have QTS (qualified teacher status), which is fantastic. I would highly recommend Adrian to any training teacher finding the Skills Test very difficult. – Ozlem Kaplan - S (aged 10 and has groovy hair) |

That was a really fun class Adrian. (Adrian: I hope that doesn´t mean the others were boring) - R (aged 8, her birthday is on Thursday, she hasn´t let me forget) |

H was at her friend´s house today. She describes the tutor. She says, "He seemed really boring, you know he´s not like you. You normally arrive and say "hey". She pulls a face. I mimic her. We laugh. I think she´s trying to say I arrive in a good mood. Either that or she thinks I pull some strange faces. - H (aged 9, she can be a bit of pain sometimes but she´s good fun) |

I am an RE Teacher, and completed my PGCE in 2009. The Numeracy skills test was something I had struggled with hugely for approximately a year and half, and with the great help of Adrian, I managed to pass my Numeracy test after just three sessions with him! I cannot thank him enough, as passing this test means I now have QTS (qualified teacher status) which is a massive change in both recognition and pay as a teacher. - Haseena Rajput. |
