- Personal Message
- I can aid you through examinations or coursework or even just help you get that edge over your classmates! I am very friendly but determined to get the best out of my students so I do set homework!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I trained as a Medical Scientist but specialised in Chemistry during my Post Graduate Certificate in Education. As such, I am able to teach all aspects of Science to KS4 (GSCE) and Chemistry and Biology to A level. With the amalgamation of the scientific principles currently at KS3/4; the ability to branch across the specialism’s more comfortably than some conventional science mentors, is particularly useful for students who struggle with scientific ideas and applications in general. I currently hold the post of an A Level Chemistry and Biology Teacher in a private educational institution based in Brighton.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I obtained the following A Levels (2004) Biology A Chemistry A Physics B General Studies A I read ‘Medical Sciences’ at the University of Birmingham, Medical School, where I received a 2.1 (Hons) B.Med.Sc (2007) I qualified with a Post Graduate Certificate in Education in Chemistry at the University of Birmingham, School of Education (Summer of 2008) with a Merit at Masters Level.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have worked with young people and in education for a number of years now. Despite still being in education myself, my first tutoring job was with a company call Explore Learning where I held the position of Personal tutor, working with children 4-13 years old, helping them to complete educational activities designed specifically for their learning needs. (For more information: http://www.explorelearning.ltd.uk/tutor.html). In the years leading up to my qualification as a secondary school teacher I worked part-time for a company called EF Language Travel, which is one of the leading English language schools, based in over 50 countries in Europe, Asia and America. I spent two summers (2006/07) as a Local Leader for a summer camp in Brighton where I was responsible for a class of 25 students from all over Europe, teaching them English and taking them on tours around London and the Brighton & Hove region. In the summer of 2008 I was promoted to Activity Organiser for Brighton and Hove Area (Management position). I was responsible for the Activities of 4000 thousand EF Students, over the summer season. My role included co-coordinating the bookings, over-seeing the health & safety and leading a team of 25 Activity Leaders, to ensure students have a safe and enjoyable time in the UK. (For more information; http://www.ef.com/master/ils/) In 2008 I took on my first teaching role as a Secondary school teacher, delivering the national curriculum for science to pupils aged 11‐16, and up to 19 within the sixth form. This role required creativity and imagination to develop schemes of work and to plan lessons in order to foster a healthy culture of learning within the classroom and to generate the most effective interactions with pupils and students. I taught GCSE core, additional and triple sciences to students at KS4 and A Level Human Biology to students at KS5 (sixth form). My current role, which I have held since September 2011, is working for a 6th Form Independent College for international students aged 13-19 years old. Most of the students are expected to gain places in top British universities (Oxbridge) following their time at the college. I am employed by the college as a Chemistry and Biology teacher and currently deliver the following courses: IGCSE (Cambridge) Chemistry/Biology A level Chemistry A level Biology Chemistry Foundation I/II Some of these courses are delivered at an accelerated rate (such as the 9 month IGCSE course) to suit the needs of the students. This role requires me to deliver high quality science teaching, whilst taking into consideration that students are often living away from home and using English as an additional language for the first time. To ensure that my students can access and achieve within these British science qualifications, I have written schemes of work, designed interactive PowerPoint presentations and explored new avenues of scientific teaching. The small class sizes have allowed me to develop a personalised assessment schedule for each of my students, enabling me to track their progression throughout the course. This high degree of monitoring can be directly related to parents and carers, so that they in turn can provide support to the students.
- How much do you charge?
- I charge a fee of £30.00 per session for students. This is the standard rate, but I am extremely flexible to the needs of the student and will make reductions in cost if a series of sessions is secured in advance. Sessions last an hour, and I ensure that it is an hour of tutoring time, appreciating that students need time to settle and the odd distraction. I prefer not to do back-to-back sessions (2 hours) as my professional opinion is that these are not effective for learning. There are no charges for any resources used during tutoring sessions, or my travel costs (if local).
- Where do you teach?
- I am based in the centre of Brighton but will travel as far as Worthing, Newhaven or Lewes for tutoring sessions. I can travel further, but travel costs will have to be considered on top of the tuition fee. As I am a teacher in a local school I do not conduct sessions at my own residences. I generally find that most students are most comfortable and can concentrate better within their own homes. I will conduct sessions at public places (library, coffee shop…) for more mature students if this suits their needs. I am interested in the prospect of conducting tutoring sessions online, but I do feel that meeting students face-to-face is important in developing a productive learning relationship.
- When are you available?
- I available: Weekdays Mon-Fri 17:00-20:00 Weekends Sat-Sun 10:00-17:00 But as I mentioned before, I can be very flexible. Generally speaking I am available all year round, with exception of the summer holidays when I am usually tied up with other commitments or travelling.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- Science 13-16 GCSE Science (Core, Additional, Single-Triple…) 16-19 A Level Biology (also AQA Human Biology) A Level Chemistry
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- As a current employee for a private 6th form college, my CRB check is up to date. I am currently a member of the Sussex Police Special Constabulary and therefore have undertaken the respective police checks required in that process.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I am very confident in using computers and computer software. I have my own personal computer and I am very interested in the prospect on presenting tutoring sessions online if it is effective.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- I am a member of the Association for Science Education (ASE) which promotes excellence in science teaching and learning. I regularly attend meetings and conferences held by the organisation.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- University of Birmingham – School of Education Tutor: Dr Allan Soares

Assessment Study: Marking and Feedback
Assessment Study – Marking and Feedback Abstract Teachers are required to mark students’ written work. Marking allows teachers to appreciate what has been understood, what strengths and weaknesses exist; and on occasion direct teaching for future learning. Marking is therefore a form of assessment. Marking styles vary, depending on school,...
