- Personal Message
- I teach all levels from absolute beginner to diploma level. Exams are optional, A.B.R.S.M. OR L.C.M. as appropriate to the pupil. The only requirement I have is that you actually enjoy what we do.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- 'Cello, piano, keyboard and theory.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I graduated from the London College of Music, with G.L.C.M., A.L.C.M. and A.(mus)L.C.M.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have taught in local authority schools, a music teaching studio, and privately. I was principal cello at college, and have played professionally in pit orchestras, chamber orchestras, quartets, and symphony orchestras. Recently I began to play in a newly established ensemble, purely for fun, but in the hope that I could in some small way help to develop amateur orchestral playing locally, because I feel that the opportunity to play in a group is vital for students development.
- How much do you charge?
- £24 per hour, shorter lessons proportionately.
- Where do you teach?
- I come to your home, and will travel between Llanfairfechan and Abergele (roughly) and down the Conwy Valley to Betws-y-Coed. (roughly). This includes Penmaenmawr, Conwy, Mochdre, Colwyn Bay, Llysfaen, Llandulas etc
- When are you available?
- Monday to Saturday afternoons and evenings. I teach through the school holidays, but not all Bank Holidays. All holidays, yours and mine are accepted with notice, lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours notice must be paid for.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- All ages, provided a child is actually big enough to reach the instrument. All levels from beginners to diplomas.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I have not yet refused to prepare a candidate for any qualification, but usually I work towards A.B.R.S.M. or L.C.M. grades and diplomas, and G.C.S.E. and A level practical exams
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes - 2011.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- You can have a lot of fun playing the 'cello in among other musicians, whether at the back of the school orchestra section or in front playing a solo. You can buy one to get started for less than £200 - that's less than many computer game consoles! As you get older you can make musical friends and just make music together. I recently had a good playing session with a pianist who is even older than I am. Just for fun!

Cello Spikes
The cello is the same shape as a violin, but MUCH bigger. That's why it is held up by the spike. Many years ago 'cellists had to hold the instrument with their legs. Very uncomfortable. The development of the 'cello is quite interesting and worth investigating. The origin of our orchestral string instruments actually began with the viol family....
