A levels (AQA) in Music (A) and Music Technology - What kind of experience do you have?
- As a player, I have experience across many diverse areas. I am currently a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra, Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra (Principal Horn) and Guildhall Symphony Orchestra (Principal Horn). Previously, I was Principal Horn of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for 3 years and was twice consecutively a Brass Finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year. I also performed a lunchtime solo recital at the Wigmore Hall, aged 16.
I have toured with various chamber music groups across the UK and alongside acclaimed international soloists Martin Roscoe (Piano) and James Campbell (Clarinet), playing in such venues as the Wigmore Hall and the Barbican. I have performed with the LSO Brass, whilst regularly freelancing with many different orchestras/ensembles in and around London.
Having studied at Chetham's School of Music as a teenager, I have experienced intensive training in overall musicianship including Workshops, Composition/Orchestration/Arranging, Music Theory and Kodaly technique alongside my studies as a horn player. Currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama as a horn player, I also take part in weekly classes for Composition, Conducting, Kodaly technique and Harmony.
I am currently teaching privately across London and also taking workshops in schools. For the past year I have been working for the Wigmore Hall Chamber Tots programme, which focuses on music communication with children from a very young age. - How much do you charge?
- I charge £25/hour lesson and £15/half an hour.
A consultation lesson is only half the cost. - Where do you teach?
- I prefer to teach at students' houses and I am happy to travel to most areas of London.
- When are you available?
- As a musician, my schedule is flexible and my aim as a teacher is to always, most importantly, find a time that suits you.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- French Horn/Tenor Horn/Cornet/Trumpet (Any age or ability, ABRSM Grades 1-8)
Music Theory/Classical Theory (ABRSM Grades 1-8, Advanced)
Composition/Chamber Music (Intermediate-Advanced) - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I like to focus work towards ABRSM exams, as they give a clear and well graded goal to aim for. But every student will have a different view on exams - some students might thrive on the goal approaching and others wish to play without pressure and just for fun. I am perfectly happy to work towards whatever personal goal the pupil themselves may have, with or without the need for exams.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- No, as it's not a legal requirement for tutoring. This could be organised on request, however.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- Chetham's School of Music
- Lizzie Davis (Manchester Camerata)
- Richard Watkins (Philharmonia, Nash Ensemble)
Guildhall School of Music & Drama
- Jeff Bryant (LSO, RPO)
- David Pyatt (LSO)
- Hugh Seenan (LSO)
- Richard Bissill (LPO) - Do you have a personal message for students?
- For me, the greatest pleasure of any kind of music making is being able to share it with other people. Teaching you (whatever your age or ability) would be an absolute pleasure and I'd look forward to getting to know you, whilst watching you grow and improve as a musician.
My teaching is focused towards improving technical ability, whilst also heightening awareness of all round musical skills - with a view towards creating a rounded and hugely satisfying result for you, so that you can enjoy your own and others' music making to the full.
All this whilst never forgetting the most important thing about music... enjoyment and fun.
Please feel free to get in touch, and let's start making music together!
