Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Maths from age 11 to 16 (i.e. up to GCSE) plus refresher courses for adults. Most recently I also offer English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) at Introductory level.

Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a Cert.Ed. (1972) a B.A (1976) and an M.Ed.(1997). More recently, I qualified ACoT-TESOL in 2010

What kind of experience do you have?
I have been a Teacher/Tutor since 1972 ! Since then, I have taught and/or tutored in London, Hampshire, Sussex, Gibraltar and Spain.

How much do you charge?
The first (assessment) lesson/session is free, then I charge £20 for each one-hour lesson for one-to-one tuition. Groups are charged a £10 fixed fee for my presence plus a further £10 per student per hour. For discounts, see the following answer.

Where do you teach?
I usually teach at students' homes within a ten-mile radius of Portslade, covering the border areas of West Sussex, East Sussex and of course B&H City itself. This includes the Worthing, Lancing, Shoreham, Hove and Brighton districts. If students are willing instead to travel to my premises in Mile Oak for their lessons, there is a twenty percent fee discount.

When are you available?
I can tutor weekday mornings, afternoons or evenings (exceptionally Saturday mornings), academic termtime or holidays.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach mainly secondary-school age pupils from 11 up to GCSE but also (increasingly) some adult students.

Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Mainly GCSE but a number of alternatives too.

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
As from January 2011 I have had the full enhanced CRB disclosure certificate.

Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I don't yet offer online tutoring as such, though I am planning to introduce it in the 2011/12 academic yeart.

Do you belong to any professional organisations?
Yes, I'm a member of ATL, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers.

Where and with whom did you train?
The University of London Institute of Education, The Open University, The (Royal-Chartered) College of Teachers and Fairfax University.

Tell me about some of your current students.
Currently (2011/12) about a dozen (the number constantly changes) children, teenagers or adults in the Worthing and Brighton areas.

GCSE Revision Guides

Students working towards their GCSE Maths nearly always consider commercially-available 'study guides' at some stage. Usually they buy them to supplement their school textbooks if their school still provides them. Although this usually happens in Year 10 or 11, I have known a few bright sparks...
