Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach French, Spanish and Russian up to and including A-level standard and English as a foreign language to any standard. I can also help with academic writing, proof reading, editing and translation.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I am currently studying a Masters in mutli-lingual translation at UCL. I am a qualified English teacher and hold a CELTA TEFL certificate with a B pass. I also have a 1st class BA (Hons) degree in French and Russian. I did Spanish A-level and went on to do advanced language study in Spain, Colombia and Mexico.
What kind of experience do you have?
I am a part-time English teacher at The English Studio, Holborn and I have worked as a personal tutor for several years now, in London, Russia, Mexico and Spain. Since beginning tutoring in London in July 2009 I have specialised in French and taught a wide range of abilities and ages.
How much do you charge?
My standard fee is £20 an hour for all subjects. I expect to be reimbursed for travel. On line tutoring is charged at £15 an hour.
Where do you teach?
I do not teach at home and am willing to travel within London.
When are you available?
My timetable is subject to change so the best thing is for you to contact me with your availability and I will do my best to accommodate you.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages. Russian, French and Spanish I teach to A-level standard. I teach English to any standard.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I can prepare exercises and check written work but cannot do instant messaging or anything similar. Ultimately, my job is to help you with exactly what you need so the best thing to do would be to contact me telling me what you'd like from an online tutor and I will do my best to tailor a course of action to you.
Where and with whom did you train?
I am currently studying at UCL. My degree is from the University of Manchester. I studied Russian at the Benedict School in St Petersburg. I did my TEFL qualification at International House, Seville, where I also studied Spanish. I took my A-levels at City of London School for Girls.
Do you have a personal message for students?
There are as many ways to learn as there are students. It's the only subject where you can study by going to the pub for a chat, watching a film or writing a poem. I believe passionately that each language student must find their own voice and their own way of expression which comes naturally and instinctively, rather than just learning pre-fabricated sentences.
Helpful Tips for Translation
Translation can be a very useful part of language study. The most important thing to remember is DO NOT TRANSLATE LITERALLY! It is very rare that the idioms, sentence structure and style of one language can be easily transferred. Your job as a translator is to convey the sense and the meaning,...
Languages Inspire!
Words are just words and don’t amount to much; They can only create description, but in doing such They justify themselves and therein lies their beauty - Which I believe is words’ number one duty. Language is not merely a convenient tool (Though it may be used as such by any old fool) But...
