- Music is a gift and as a teacher this is always at the centre of my approach to teaching the cello.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach the Cello
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I gained a music degree at the University of Bristol (2001) and following that a postgraduate Diploma in performance on the cello at the Royal Academy of Music (2003). While studying at the Academy, I gained the LRAM teaching qualification.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have ten years experience as a teacher and run a teaching practice from my home studio in Wokingham. Alongside my private teaching I have tutored at the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music. This involves group cello teaching and ensembles for children aged 6-11. I have also taught cello for Harrow Music Service, Hertfordshire Music Service, an independent junior school in Mill Hill and for a number of other independent junior and secondary schools. I have a number of junior and adult students who I teach privately. I encourage my students to take music exams if it is appropriate for them so that they can set goals for themselves. One of my junior students has recently gained a place at the Junior Trinity School of Music.
- How much do you charge?
- I charge £35 per hour.
- Where do you teach?
- I have a a bright home studio in Wokingham from where I run my teaching practice. The nearest train station is Winnersh (5 minutes walk) It is easy to park outside our house.
- When are you available?
- Lessons can be booked Mondays - Thursdays. For children, I recommend a lesson once a week. For adults, I understand the challenges that can be faced in achieving a lesson every week so I am happy to come up with a lesson schedule to suit you.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach children and adults of all ages and as a general rule, I recommend that age 5 is the earliest suitable age to begin learning the cello. I teach all levels and have a strong belief in developing good technique from the very beginning in all my students alongside nurturing their own musical personality.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I believe in setting goals for students. I regularly prepare my students for the Associated Board Exams and have prepared students for Junior Trinity School of Music Entrance Exams. I also help students prepare for Grade 5 theory.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I have a current CRB certificate.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- I am a member of the Musicians Union, European String Teachers Association and the London Cello Society.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I studied the cello with Dr Ioan Davies in Bristol and Lionel Handy at the Royal Academy of Music. I have since had lessons and masterclasses from Sue Lowe, Louise Hopkins and Alexander Baillie. As a dedicated and active performer and teacher, there is always something new to be learnt and I continue to study and learn from others to enrich my work both as a cellist and teacher. I also spent two years working alongside Wendy Max at the Junior Academy of Music in London between 2005 and 2007. This gave me great insight into the teaching of youngsters from the age of 5 using the Sheila Nelson methoid of String Teaching.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- I teach a wide range of personalities and abilities, I have a beginner adult student who is in her forties and studying for a PhD, while another junior student who has developed very well over the last couple of years is now attending Saturday School at the Trinity College of Music in Greenwich.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- Music is a gift, and as a teacher this is always at the centre of my approach to teaching the cello. I want all my students to feel inspired and enthused by what they achieve in their lessons and in between lessons. I am dedicated to nurturing the musical side of my students, whatever form that takes as well as teaching a solid technique in a methodical way.

The Benefits of Private Music Lessons
