- A big hello to all clarinet and saxophone enthusiasts.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach Clarinet and Saxophone at all levels including adult beginners and very advanced. I also run ad-hoc workshop groups to introduce my students to group playing - for example, trios and quartets. Should students be interested in taking grades, I can either work alongside schools for those wanting to sit grade exams with them, concentrating more on technique and performance in these situations, or I can enter and prepare students for exams independently. The element of enjoyment of the instrument remains central in either case.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I am educated to degree level (not music), and have played since my pre-teens.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been a professional musician all my working life, running a variety of rock bands in London in the '80s, then on the jazz circuit, including TV appearances on Wogan with the Paul Turner Big Band. I have considerable orchestral experience, including pit-work for musicals. I currently run a function jazz band and various recording projects (see website).
- How much do you charge?
- My basic costs per hour are: £30, plus approx £8 travel within a 10 mile radius.
- Where do you teach?
- I teach both at my house and your home. I am just off the A3 at Milford and 1 mile from Milford Station (Waterloo/Portsmouth harbour). I can travel within a 10 mile radius.
- When are you available?
- I do not normally teach at the weekend, apart from Saturday morning workshops.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach all ages/levels, but minimum time is 1 hour, so I tend not to teach the very young.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
- I belong to the Musicians' Union.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- My best teacher ever was Haydn Robinson, former principal trombonist with the Black Dyke Mills band, and a formidable arranger and Dance band leader as well.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- I have a wide variety of ages, from junior school beginners to A Level/Grade 8 students (at Godalming College), as well as adults at all stages, some of whom have gone on to public performance. Although I tend not to work exclusively with formal exam curricula, those students who have studied for grade exams with me have always done very well, including one who gained a full music scholarship.

The ProSax Companion Tutorial System
