Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach the Trombone from beginner through to advanced, and Trumpet, Euphonium and Cornet up to Grade 5 standard.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a DipABRSM diploma in trombone performance and am currently in my 3rd year of a Bachelor of Music degree at the Royal College of Music. I also have Grades 1 - 6 music theory.
What kind of experience do you have?
I started trumpet and trombone at a very young age and in the last 8 years have been specialising on the trombone. I was Principal Trombone in the National Youth Orchestra with whom I was a member for 4 years. This gave me the opportunity to perform up and down the country at events such as the BBC Proms. I am constantly playing with Royal College of Music ensembles and orchestras including the Symphony Orchestra as well playing at external engagements. I also have extensive experience in the pop music industry as I am a session trombonist for the pop band The Hoosiers and have toured all over the world with them, performing for TV, Radio and on major festival stages. I have experience of working with young children in outreach projects in schools, teaching them about brass instruments as well doing rhythmic and singing excercises with them.
How much do you charge?
I charge £30 an hour or £18 for half an hour.
Where do you teach?
I can teach at your home and am willing to travel to most parts of London provided travel is fairly straightforward. I also teach in Essex, particularly Southend-on-Sea and the surrounding areas.
When are you available?
My availabiltiy is flexible, I never have one week the same as the one before so please contact me for times you would wish to have a lesson and we can sort future lessons out from there.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages. I can teach trombone from beginner up to advanced and the trumpet, euphonium and cornet up to grade 5.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
I do not currently as I have only ever taught privately.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I belong to the Musicians Union and the International Trombone Association.
Where and with whom did you train?
I began my training at the Royal College of Music Junior Department with Simon Hogg and Peter Harvey. While I was there I was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and received extensive training from Peter Gane, and Chris Houlding. I have taken part in Masterclasses with Dennis Wick, Don Lusher, Byron Fulcher, Kevin Morgan, Roger Argente and Dudley Bright. I currently study at the Royal college of Music under Lindsay Shilling, Byron Fulcher and Roger Harvey.
Do you have a personal message for students?
If you have any queries please do not hesitate to get in touch. I put the well-being and peace of mind of my students as a priority and am willing to do what I can to help you with your learning. I can teach to prepare you and enter you for ABRSM graded exams or, if you just want to learn casually in a relaxed and unpressured atmosphere, that is also perfectly fine.
Marcus Bonna Trombone Cases
After years of playing the trombone and having to deal with finding the perfect case for my trombone in what was very much a trial and error fashion (resulting in many crumpled bells and dents), I finally settled, about three years ago, on the Marcus Bonna tenor trombone case. It exceeded...
