- I am passionate about English literature and language. I believe I can help my students feel good about the subject, and themselves - and achieve their full potential.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach English literature from KS3 onwards, to university level.
I also teach literacy skills from KS2 onwards. I can help with grammar, spelling, reading, handwriting, reading choices and vocabulary. - Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a PhD in English Literature 1918-1939.
I have an MA, Distinction, in Romantic Literature 1780-1830.
I have a BA Hons, First Class, in English Literature and Language. - What kind of experience do you have?
- I taught English literature to undergraduates for four years, covering prose and poetry from the 18th century to the 20th. As part of that role, I set and marked essays, offered constructive criticism and feedback, and helped my students realise their full potential.
I currently teach literacy to children from KS 2 - Years 4 and 6 - heping them with specific literacy challenges including spelling, handwriting, reading and vocabulary. I also have experience of teaching a gifted and talented KS2, offering suitable challenges and stimuli to meet their needs. - How much do you charge?
- I charge £20 an hour for KS2, £25 an hour for KS3, £30 an hour for GCSE, and £35 an hour for A level.
I charge £40 an hour for university-level work.
For proof-reading and essay-writing work, my fee is £30 an hour.

I obtained my MA and PhD at the University of York. - Tell me about some of your current students.
- I currently tutor students from years 4 and 6 (KS2), and am helping them with literacy skills by using a holistic and theme-based approach which engages as it instructs. My standards and expections are high, and I help my students meet them by maintaining a positive approach and devising tailored learning-solutions for each child.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- I want you to lose the fear, gain the confidence, and learn to love English literature and language - and I can support you every step of the way.

So when is an essay not an essay?
So, when is an essay not an essay? When it’s a ramble; when it’s a rant. Crude labels, I know; but all too often as a university tutor I was presented with work which, over the course of a few random pages, meandered without purpose or raged at top volume. The shame was that my students were keen and bright. Many had come from good schools...
Dictionary Corner . . .
I love dictionaries - they are heavy and substantial, they feel great in your hands and look beautiful on your desk. Internet versions are a joyless substitute for the real thing. What's more, there are excellent versions out there for children. The Oxford School Dictionary 2011 I have found particularly useful, with easy-to-read type, and...
My Testimonials
|
'I really appreciate the incisive and encouraging comments you made on my essay . . . Also, I appreciate how carefully you listen to your students; I was always impressed by and grateful for the ways you prompted, pared, questioned, encouraged, and re-directed comments in class and tutorials. . . there are many specific things I noticed and learned from you, but mostly I want you to know that I was happy to be working with you in your class - it was a wholly positive experience for me.' - Kristen Holland |
