About Shin

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have experience teaching adult and child students privately from ages ranging 7 to 50 for the past 5 years. My current students have a broad range of standards and experience, from beginner, to ABRSM diploma level.

I hold an DBS check and work regularly coaching in special educational needs schools.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I spent 4 years at Chetham's School of Music studying piano with Jonathan Middleton. During university I studied piano with Hilary Coates for 3 years. Over the years I have played to highly renowned pianists such as Vovka Ashkenazy, Martin Roscoe, Kathryn Stott and Christopher Elton. During my postgraduate course at the Royal Academy of Music I studied with Carole Presland.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

My education work includes coaching on the Pro Corda Chamber Music Academy where he works as a chamber music and composition coach. I also runs workshops for their special educational needs outreach programme, the recent winners of the National Lottery's People's Projects prize.

I am also a member of the Orchestra of Sound and Light. An ensemble run by the head of music at Sussex University that specialises in bringing classical music education to schools from primary to 6th form level.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My students are very diverse. I have taught students with autism who have gone on to study at music conservatoire, as well as enthusiastic adult beginners. Many of my students are currently preparing for their ABRSM exams from grade 1 to 8.

English

Born and raised in England, I have been playing the piano since the age of 2! I hope to help others onto a path that I have so enjoyed.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach piano and music theory. Lessons can be given in French and English.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I gained a 1st in Music Informatics at Sussex University and received the School of Media, Film and Music prize for my end of year recital. I received and A and A* for music A-level and GCSE respectively. I have recently completed a Master of Music degree in piano performance from the Royal Academy of Music where I also gained their teaching qualification: LRAM.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £50 pounds per hour.

- Where do you teach?

Lessons usually take place at my home in London, SW10 area. My teaching room has an upright Welmar piano and a Yamaha Clavinova. The student will play the Welmar upright while I demonstrate and/or accompany from the clavinova. This allows for a smoother lesson with no need for swapping places all the time! The closest underground station is Earl's Court. I am happy to travel to the student's home provided they live close by.

- When are you available?

Please contact me to discuss availability. I am quite flexible and I also teach weekends.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach piano to students of all standards, from complete beginner to post grade 8. I teach music theory from grades 1 to 8.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Most of my students sit for ABRSM exams. They have enjoyed great success with many achieving distinction at a young age.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Lessons are always fun and energetic, with a large focus placed on music making and story telling, rather than technique alone. Communication is key in music, and each lesson addresses this with full enthusiasm.
