Personal Message

I am a freelance trumpet player and I have been teaching for 5 years and have had pupils ranging between ages 11-35 and abilities from beginners to grade 5 standard. My view on learning to play the trumpet is that it is there to be enjoyed and I try my best to show this when I teach. Although it is beneficial to learn the right technique to play the instrument, I believe it is best for the pupils to be inspired to play music and enjoy naturally improving on the instrument.

Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach the Trumpet and Cornet, but have also taught beginners on the drums in the past.

Tell me about your qualifications.
I have gained a BMus (hons) from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, PGDip from the Royal College of Music and an LRSM performance diploma which I achieved in my own time.

What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught the trumpet for 5 years was the brass tutor on 'Musicale' summer school which involved me teaching larger groups.

How much do you charge?
I charge £25 per hour and depending on how far I have to travel I may add £2-4. For group lessons I charge £15 per hour for each student.

Where do you teach?
It is best for me to travel to students' houses but I do occasionally teach at my own home. I am willing to travel to most parts of London but the areas that are closest to me include: West Hampstead, Hampstead Heath, Kilburn, Cricklewood, Finchley Road, Swiss Cottage, St. Johns Wood, Maida Vale and Finchley Road.

When are you available?
I tend to teach in the early evenings after school and work but also teach on Saturday and Sunday mornings if it more conveniant. It is up to parents or pupils wheather they would like lessons in school holidays but I am generally quite flexible.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
I have taught ages between 11-35 and standards varying from beginners to grade 5.

Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
If students wish to take grade exams then I am willing to teach them all the relevent information and have done so in the past. There are also a few different exam boards that can be better suited for different students.

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
I do have a CRB certificate.

Where and with whom did you train?
I trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Paul Beniston and then completed a year's Post Graduate course at the Royal College of Music with Alistair Mackey.

Do you have a personal message for students?
Music is to be enjoyed and learning to play the trumpet is a fantastic oppotunity to express yourself with music.

My Articles

Starting off Playing the Trumpet

Learning to play any instrument should be fun. The trumpet is just a device to play music through and enables others to enjoy music as well. Listening to music is a fantastic inspiration to practise and copy what you have heard, which develops your technique and musicianship skills. It is not...
