Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
At A level, I teach physics, maths and chemistry. I teach all maths and science subjects up to GCSE. For a number of clients, I have also helped with English language and history up to GCSE, as well as school entrance exams and verbal/nonverbal reasoning test taking strategies.

Tell me about your qualifications.
I graduated from University College London in 2004 with a BSc (Honours) degree in Combined Sciences. I then studied at Roehampton University for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, and have been registered as a qualified teacher since 2005.

What kind of experience do you have?
I have worked as a tutor since 2006. Tuition has all the great parts of teaching, such as helping young people learn and grow in confidence, without many of the negative aspects that cause many teachers to leave the profession within the first few years.

With each young person I tutor, the approach and format tends to vary, depending on the learning style that best suits that student. This is the key reason why tutoring can be so successful, either as a short-term boost prior to an exam, or as an ongoing process of helping the student stay ahead of the schoolwork.

As well as private tutoring, I also teach maths and science to small groups of students at a tuition centre. I also work with the UK's largest tuition agency, Fleet Tutors, and have tutored a number of students in local authority care.

Here are some details about students I have privately tutored during 2010 and 2011:

How much do you charge?
My standard fee for tuition provided to private clients, in the student's own home, is £37 per hour.

Tutoring is charged at the same rate for all subjects and academic levels. Within a 15 mile radius of Bedford, this fee includes travel.

Where do you teach?
I teach in the students' own homes, generally within a 15 mile radius of Bedford. Locations within this radius include Bedford, Sandy, Kempston, Silsoe, Sharnbrook, Felmersham, and Harrold. Unfortunately, because of heavy traffic I am unable assist clients in Milton Keynes on weekday evenings.

When are you available?
Inevitably most tuition takes place at evenings and weekends. I do have some weekday daytime slots free for sixth formers with free study periods

Which ages and levels do you teach?
Most of my work is at the GCSE and A level age range, but I have taught children as young as six. Currently, I tutor several primary-age students in English and maths.

Primary teaching is not my speciality, however, so if there are specific difficulties (such as dyslexia) that a student is experiencing with learning, it may be more approprate for parents to seek help from a more qualified tutor.

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes, issued in April 2010 by Fleet Tutors. Past and existing clients are regularly asked to provide references for my services, and typically I will provide 2 or 3 references to new clients upon request.

Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am fully registered as a qualified teacher with the General Teaching Council.

I am also a Member of the Institute of Physics
