Personal Message
Singing lessons are not just about learning to sing. They are about growing confidence, managing nerves, encouraging physical well-being and opening up a genuine career path.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
Singing. I believe that a good understanding of how the voice works and a solid technique are essential for any style of singing, then you can grow in any style you like, producing a healthy, natural sound that will only get stronger the more you use it. I have prepared singers for music college auditions, west-end auditions and recording sessions, and started complete beginners on their journey (past pupils have included everything from a deaf rocker to a Classical Brit Award nominee...).
Tell me about your qualifications.
I trained for my Masters at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and before that, received myBMus from the university of Sheffield. I spent the last year studying at English National Opera, on the Operaworks course.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching for many years, both privately and as singing teacher to the choir of Oriel College Oxford. This year I appeared as a guest for Garsington Opera Education, and helped to set-up the Voces Cantabiles Music Foundation.
I am also a busy and successful performer, and perform all over the world. Most recently I have worked withEnglish National Opera, Scottish Opera, The National Theatre, Garsington Opera, Iford Opera, Nationale Riessopera, Opera de Bauge, and many more. I have also sung in venues across London, including The Royal Albert Hall, The Royal Festival Hall, LSO St. Lukes and The Globe Theatre.
How much do you charge?
Lessons are currently set at £35 per hour.
Where do you teach?
I prefer to teach at a studio in Kings Cross (2 minutes from the station) but will travel, within reason.
When are you available?
My schedule is flexible, and can accommodate most requests.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
Any age can be taught to sing. 5 - 95.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Singing exams, music college auditions, concerts, X-Factor auditions... different pupils have different goals, from singing grades, a run of operatic performances, recordings, or just singing to the family at Christmas!
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes I do. As a tutor and performer I have regular CRB checks.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
Singing cannot be taught online. It would be dangerous to do so.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the Musicians Union.
Where and with whom did you train?
I currently study on the Operaworks course at English National Opera, before that at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and before that at The University of Sheffield, and I also spent time at the University of Aveiro in Portugal.
My main singing teachers have been Ashley Stafford and Andrew Watts (with whom I continue to study) I have also had masterclasses from Anonio Salgado, Sarah Walker, Eugnine Asti and many others. In my work as a professional I have worked with many conductors such as Christian Curnyn, Andrew Lawrence-King and Marco Osbic, directors such as Martin Constantine and Stephen Langridge and worked with many great performers.
Tell me about some of your current students.
My students are many and varied, from an RnB singer wanting to audition for xfactor, to an operatic soprano auditioning for music college, a Brit award nominee and even an actress from a popular channel 4 comedy. I love teaching people who are having lessons for the first time, and watching them grow.
Do you have a personal message for students?
If you are looking for positive teaching, based on genuine knowledge and experience then Look no further! I am a busy performer working with the best in the business. I work with both the classical opera/choral and mainstream pop/recording worlds. I believe that a good understanding of how the voice works and a solid technique are essential for any style of singing, then you can grow in any style you like, producing a healthy, natural sound that will only get stronger the more you use it. beginners as well as pro's are very welcome.
