I am a recent graduation of Gonville & Caius College Cambridge, where I studied mathematics, obtaining a 1st in each of my three undergraduate years and a Distinction in Part III of the tripos. I am currently studying composition at masters level with Gary Carpenter, on an entrance scholarship, at the Royal Northern College of Music whilst taking oboe lessons from Melinda Maxwell.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach music composition, theory, oboe, piano and mathematics at all levels.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a 1st class BA in mathematics from Gonville & Caius College, a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Mathematics (Distinction) and for my musical side, I have ABRSM Grade 8 in both oboe and piano (both Distinction, same mark - 142) and an ABRSM Piano Performance diploma. I have ABRSM Grade 5 theory, although that was when I was 11! I also obtained 10 A* and 2 A at GCSE, 5 A at A level (Maths, Further Maths, Music, Physics and French), have a Physics AEA (Merit) and obtained two grade 1s in STEP II and III.
What kind of experience do you have?
Aside from a maths background, I am a dedicated composer and have had numerous performances of my work in RNCM festivals, including my Oboe Quartet which was reviewed as "impressively unified" in the Sunday Times. As an oboist, together with the Eblana String Trio I hold the title of RNCM Ensemble of the Year and have given performances in the North Norfolk Music Festival, Windsor Festival and am dedicated to the performance of new music, having played solo pieces by Ferneyhough, Casken, Cage, Saxton as well as fellow student composers, and in RNCM festivals of the music of Weir, Goehr and Schwertsik. I was for three years a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, finishing as sub-principal oboist. Whilst in Cambridge, my music was performed by the Choir of Gonville & Caius College, and an orchestral piece won the CUMS Composition Competition resulting in a performance under Peter Stark.
How much do you charge?
£20 for all lessons, but see below...
Where do you teach?
I cycle to people's homes - if you live further out from the city centre (e.g. Stretford, Audenshaw, Salford), then I usually add £10 per session for travel time and costs.
When are you available?
Subject to availability! Being a composer, I'm lucky to have a lot of flexibility though - no times are particularly bad.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
All levels from GCSE upwards, or in the case of music lessons, all levels.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Yes - I have an Enhanced Disclosure issued in October 2009.
