- Personal Message
- I am a BA Music student at the University of York. Originally from Bedfordshire, I play in a wide variety of ensembles, and also compose regularly.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- All aspects of Trombone and Composition. I can teach conventional and jazz trombone, conventional and jazz composition, and songwriting.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- GCSE Music (A* in 2006) achieved at age 14. A Level Music (A in 2009). Studying for a BA (2012)
Trombone Grade 8 (distinction)
I am currently studying for a BA in Music at the University of York. - What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been playing the trombone since October 2001. After just 28 months, I achieved Grade 7 at the age of 12. In the intervening years I started playing jazz, firstly in the big band of BBC trumpeter Nigel Carter. Aged 13, I was principal trombone in the Bedfordshire County Youth Orchestra. I also started composing at that age, and my music is regularly performed, especially at university. In 2010 I won the St Andrews Composition Competition with my brass band piece 'The Eagle', and an excerpt of my music will be performed as part of a medley by New York-based ensemble loadbang in summer 2011.
- How much do you charge?
- £20 per hour mainly, with expenses, unless you live within walking distance of the University of York where expenses are not required.
For a group lesson, negotiatons can be reached depending on the size of the group.
Consultation lessons are offered at a discount.
If you successfully refer someone to me I can offer a free lesson in return. - Where do you teach?
- I can teach in the music department of the University of York. I will gladly travel to students' homes too. I am based in York, but am happy to teach in anywhere within half-an-hour's train journey from York, such as Leeds, Selby and Doncaster. I can only teach during term-times.
In Bedfordshire, I can teach during the University holidays, especially the summer holiday where I am at home for three months. I live near Ampthill and would be able to drive to anywhere fairly close- this includes Bedford, Milton Keynes, Luton, Leighton Buzzard and Biggleswade. - When are you available?
- York: Due to the nature of my course, term-time lesson times may be fairly flexible. I am usually free however most weekends.
Bedfordshire: During the holidays, I should largely be free, although evenings may be preferred. - Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I can teach all ages and levels for my advertised subjects.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- If a student wished to study for an examination, I would go by the ABRSM method.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- Whether you are a dedicated musician at an advanced level or just a beginner wishing to try something, I can accommodate you. The main aim of music is to have fun, and I hope my lessons will encompass that.
My Articles
Composition is not as daunting as you may think!
Some people are often put off by the idea of composing, but why? I have heard many people saying "I can't do it", but in reality, anyone who likes listening to music can do it. Everyone has their own unique compositional style and influences- no two people like and dislike exactly the same music by the same artists and composers. Each person...
