Personal Message
All students will benefit from individual teaching. I hope I can help them enjoy learning languages while becoming more proficient.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach French from Beginners to university entrance level, German from Beginners to Key Stage 3, Spanish to Beginners, English to GCSE level and English as a Foreign Language. I also do some translation and proofreading.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a BA(Hons.) degree from Birmingham University and have spent a year studying abroad at the Universite Francois Rabelais, Tours, France. I have a PGCE from Oxford University in secondary Modern Languages, an MA in French from Oxford Brookes University, a Diploma in Translation from the Institute of Linguists, a post-graduate Diploma in Information Management from Northumbria University (Distinction), a TEFL Training Certificate and a Certificate in Educational Studies (TESOL) from the College of Teachers.I have also studied for specialist EFL teaching modules in Grammar Awareness and Teaching Business English.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have worked in education and training since I first qualified as a teacher. Apart from individual tuition, I have 14 years full-time teaching experience (French, German, English and some Spanish) in the state secondary education sector and have also worked as a supply teacher. I spent 11 years as a Head of Department in two different schools. I have taught adults as part of a Community Education programme (6 years). I also now accept work as a translator.
How much do you charge?
Charges are as listed above per hour. Translation would normally be charged by the number of words, so the hourly rate is approximate. New students are asked to attend an initial meeting, which is free. Group lessons (max 5) are charged at one individual rate plus 25%.
Where do you teach?
I teach at home. Individual arrangements can be made for students in the Hexham/Corbridge area who are unable to come to my home.
When are you available?
I am available between 9am and 6pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning. I do not normally teach after 6pm or at the weekend.
However, if these times are not convenient, it is sometimes possible to make alternative arrangements, so do get in touch.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
All ages and levels.
Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Internal school examinations, GCSE and A Levels, IELTS exam. preparation.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
No - this was not a requirement when I was employed as a full-time teacher. I can, however, provide references if required.
Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I have a Skype connection for online tutoring and would also use email to contact my students.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
General Teaching Council, Association for Language Learning, Institute of Translation and Interpreting
Where and with whom did you train?
I did my teacher training at the Department of Education, Oxford University. My college was St Edmund Hall. In addition to my other qualifications, I trained at Northumbria University as a mentor for students taking courses in Initial Teacher Training.
Tell me about some of your current students.
I currently teach a number of students who are learning French, ranging from Beginners to A'Level standard. I am also teaching Spanish and preparing students for IELTS exams. In the recent past, interest has also been expressed in courses in Business French.
Do you have a personal message for students?
I enjoy teaching and have a thorough knowledge of my subject. Individual lessons will help you progress more quickly, whether you are learning purely for enjoyment, or for business, or to pass exams, or all three.
