Interview:

Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Singing, Flute and Theory.

How much do you charge?
Singing: I currently charge £35 per hour, £27 for 3/4 hour and £18 for 1/2 hour but give reductions for unemployed, students and children, i.e. £28 per hour. For group lessons, I charge £36 per hour but divide the cost up between the pupils, so if 2 pupils shared a lesson, it would cost them £18 each.

Flute: I charge £28 per hour, £21 for 3/4 hour and £14 for 1/2 hour.

Where do you teach?
I teach from home and am easy to get to, being near Wanstead station (7 mins), on the central line. You can also get buses from Walthamstow, South Woodford, Forest Gate and Manor Park. I am willing to travel to students if they are unable to come to me and are within walking distance or a short bus ride away.

When are you available?
I teach all days except Sundays and prefer Saturdays to weekday evenings if possible.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach singing to all levels and flute to Grade 7, both from age 8 upwards. Adults beginners are welcome.
I feel that I can get the voice out of a beginner and develop and refine the voices of more advanced pupils, undoing vocal problems if necessary.

Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a BMus (Hons) degree, (music) from Royal Holloway College, London University and an ARCM diploma in singing teaching. I also have a post-graduate Certificate from Trinity College of Music.

Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians and in their Private Teachers and Performers registers. I am also a member of British Actors Equity.

Where and with whom did you train?
I was a post-graduate student at Trinity College of Music, but most of my vocal training has been with private teachers, e.g. Jane Manning OBE, Lillian Watson and Paul Farringdon.

What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching privately for nearly 20 years as well as teaching in schools, theatre schools and adult education. This means that I have taught on a one to one basis, as well as groups.

Do you have a personal message for students?
Please come for a consultation. You cannot tell how or if a teacher can help you until you actually have a lesson or two with them (one lesson isn't always enough to judge). And don't necessarily go to the first teacher who is willing to take you on - shop around so you get an idea!
I would also advise potential pupils to not use price as the sole criteria - one would hope that you pay for what you get, though some teachers are better value than others. Don't go to a teacher just because she/he is cheap as they may not be as experienced. Likewise, don't go to an expensive teacher with the presumption that they must be good - they might be over priced, or even charletons.
The most important thing is that they can help develop your voice in a safe and efficient way. Going to a cheap, inexperienced teacher might cost you more in the long run -and not just in money! Going to an expensive charleton will cost you even more!
