Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach both Maths and Music at all levels up to 1st year university.

Tell me about your qualifications.
I have an MSci in Mathematics from Imperial College London, and an MMus in Orchestral Performance from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I am currently a Junior Fellow at the Guildhall School. I held the position of Principal Bass Trombone, Tenor Trombone and Euphonium in the European Union Youth Orchestra and Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, Tenor Trombone in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, Principal Baritone Horn in the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, and played Alto Trombone and Bass Trumpet in various ensembles at the Guildhall School and around London.
I gained 5 As at A-level, and 7 A*s and 3 As at GCSE.

What kind of experience do you have?
Maths:
I taught science and maths for Imperial outreach from 2006-08. This involved working on various school workshops (in robotics, mathematics, biology, medicine - in particular I worked for 3 months running a Saturday school in Mathematics at Villiers High School in Southall), and over 15 week-long Summer School workshops spread over three years. This included being Senior Residential Mentor on the NAGTY (National Association for Gifted and Talented Youth) Science, Maths and Business Course at Imperial College in 2006-07. I have regularly tutored privately in London since 2008.
Music:
I have been involved in a wide-range of education projects over the last few years. At Guildhall I have taken part in a number of projects with the London Symphony Orchestra (visiting schools, taking group rehearsals, playing along-side children), I co-organised a trip to Sherbourne, Dorset with our college brass 10-piece to give workshops in local schools and perform concerts, and I have given lessons privately on an individual basis. Whilst at Imperial I was Chairman of the University of London Symphony Orchestra, with whom I initiated an education-outreach programme. In this we visited schools throughout London performing workshops and playing for the school children, telling them about orchestral music. We continued our education programme whilst on tour in Hong Kong, giving workshops and performing a concert in a local school. I have privately tutored in all brass instruments throughout London since 2007.
I have extensive experience as a performer on the trombone and its related instruments (alto, tenor, bass trombone, euphonium, bass trumpet) in a variety of styles and ensembles, from orchestral to jazz, chamber music to concertos and recitals. I have toured throughout Europe with various ensembles, and toured the Philippines in 2005 with Imperial Brass; Japan, Korea and China with the European Union Youth Orchestra and Hong Kong with the University of London Symphony Orchestra. I have studied with most of the Principal Trombonists in London.

How much do you charge?

Which ages and levels do you teach?
Maths:
I am best suited to teaching GCSE and A-level standard students, but am available for other ages as well.
Music:
I teach all ages (including mature students) and all standards up to Diploma.

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?

Junior Fellow at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama

Where and with whom did you train?

An Essay on Maths Teaching in Schools

I wrote this essay for the Imperial Newsletter in 2005. I was asked to discuss the supposed decline in Mathematics in schools in the UK, and to give a students opinion on the matter. It is a little precocious, but I hope it gives some idea of may attitude towards maths! "Maths throughout the...
