Interview
Which subject(s) do you teach?
I tutor English and Literature as well as offering Expert Feedback on essays, dissertations, UCAS forms and Creative Writing Projects. I prepare students for examinations up to PhD levels. I am also a qualified NLP Master Practitioner and have found NLP very useful in enhancing students' confidence and creative thinking. I am a facilitator with Liverpool University's Nationally influential Get into Reading (GIR) Scheme. I carry out tutoring via email/telephone too and this is very helpful for students preparing essays and projects. I write for Carol Ann Duffy's web site Sheer Poetry and am particularly fond of teaching Shakespeare, Victorian literature, Contemporary Fiction, Creative Writing, the Short Story and Toni Morrison. I have just published two new introductions for the Worth Press' editions of Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol and my current project 'Reading Adventures: Rebuilding the Ruin'd Chapel' should be available for students to buy/read off my web site early in 2010.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I hold First Class Hons. English/Russian Studies (with prize), an MA in Victorian Literature and a PHd in Katherine Mansfield and the Short Story all from Liverpool University. David Almond's 'rooined chapel' in The Savage
Life rarely leaves us to deal with just one problem by itself. It seems to have little respect for singularity or tidiness!! For as this thing called 'life' dismantles some of our most familiar and trusted structures, then another 'event ' often coinicides and we are left emotionallly and...
The Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy's Last Post
Carol Ann Duffy was asked to create a poem to mark the final passing of the last World War One Survivor Harry Allingham and here she movingly rewinds the mindless slaughter and reveals the expansiveness of futures which were sacrificed over hellish yards of mud. The 'width 'of the words deployed...
Sarah Waters' and Carol Ann Duffy's Pearls?
The dramatic monologue often explores the unsettling ambivalence of desire. A voice speaks to us of intimacies and longings that may threaten to dismantle the very structure of the private life, even of identity itself. The reader becomes aware of the speaker’s compelling need to reveal through...
To The Lighthouse: Woolf's Elegy to the past?
(The following is a model essay) 'One sees a fin passing far out. What image can I reach to convey what I mean? Really there is none, I think.' Woolf writing in her diary of 1925 reveals her life long concern with the problematic representation of experience. Her sense of reality's...
