About Joanna
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught privately (elocution, singing, drama, EFL) for several years and have had a regular, flexible position in a highly respected school for teaching English as a Foreign Language for the last 6 years. I have also led singing workshops and choirs, including for BBC employees and people at Guy's Hospital. I have worked professionally as an actress and singer for the last 10 years, alongside teaching and proofreading.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I've given singing and drama lessons to shy teenagers, coached an 8 year old boy in elocution and drama, helped an Israeli lawyer with accent reduction and confidence in public speaking, led choirs for BBC workers and hospital staff, and I had a fixed contract at ITV providing elocution assistance for sales pitches and presentations.

I am a Cambridge University educated EFL teacher specialising in elocution and accent work. I also work as a professional singer and actress and love teaching singing and leading choirs. I enjoy teaching people of all ages and nationalities!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
English as a Foreign Language, Elocution, Accent Reduction (foreign/regional/public school...!), RP/old 'BBC English' , essay writing and proofreading / improving English that has been translated, private speech and drama lessons (one to one or two to one), script work and line testing, preparation for auditions and LAMDA exams, singing (classical/musical theatre/pop), leading choirs.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
1st class degree in Modern Languages, Cambridge University (specialising in literature), followed by an MA Distinction in Acting and Musical Theatre, Central School of Speech and Drama (specialising in voice) and CELTA grade A (Teaching English as a Foreign Language). Associated Board exams up to Grade 8 distinction: singing and cello. Pitman qualified touch typer, 75 words per minute.
- How much do you charge?
£40 an hour for most disciplines, with the exception of singing, which I charge at £34/hour with an extra £6 on top to hire a music room. Before your first lesson, I will correspond with you or chat to you on the phone to ascertain what you need. After each lesson I will give you advice about what and how to practise. An introductory lesson costs £35/hour.
Half hour elocution/accent diagnosis: £20, my home in SE19 or potentially a Central London cafe (follow up lessons with tailor-made materials cost £40)
- Where do you teach?
My home in SE19 (Gipsy Hill) or very occasionally a central London cafe if the student wishes to study English as a foreign language in a more informal environment and is not put off by the noise or the presence of other people, but this is not appropriate for most disciplines. I occasionally travel to students' homes if teaching more than one person at the same address.
- When are you available?
I currently have both daytime and early evening availability.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
All
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
EFL qualifications (FCE, IELTS etc), Associated Board exams, LAMDA exams
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I hope to hear from you soon!

On elocution:
I am a deputy head in a small school dealing with parents and teachers on a daily basis and I've always felt unconfortable during speaches due to my accent. Jo is very patient and has made my lessons interesting and fun. I was a bit worried when I started, but Jo was so encouraging and positive, she gave me the confidence to persevere. The lessons are a mixture of repetitive pronunciation work, reading together and acting out passages from plays and other texts. Thank you Jo!On leading a choir:
Joanna managed to get a room full of busy people who didn't know each other singing close harmony jazz within an hour, and performing a concert after four or five sessions. She made it easy and was an excellent musical leader. I sing regularly in a number of choirs and was very impressed with the results she achieved despite the many obstacles of working in a hospital including one session which was accompanied by a fire alarm. On Elocution: 'My son had elocution lessons with Jo as he had problems with articulation, a mixture of accent and bad habits. The lessons were fun, and well prepared and thought through, but more than that, my son has become able see all those other ways in which he could speak and I can now observe him switching between different modalities of language when he needs to. Nothing else could have done it for him; this is great!
On Elocution and Accent Reduction:
From my experience working with Joanna on my accent (my mother tongue is Hebrew), Joanna always came prepared to the lessons and on time, being very professional. For me it was important to record the lessons and Joanna kindly offered to do it for me. I still have the records and am listening to them every once in a while. I enjoyed and benefited studying with Joanna and would warmly recommend her services.Jo is an amazing teacher! She gets to work straight away and made me feel very comfortable. She also allows you to record your lessons and made recordings of words I was unsure about. She listened to my concerns and made fantastic notes for me which were so easy to refer back to. Her tips are great and she explains everything very clearly. I am much more confident and feel I have achieved what I wanted so far. A big thank you for all your help, Jo!
