- I am an experienced and enthusiastic female music teacher with a postgradute performance diploma from the RNCM.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach the violin to people of all ages and standards.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- My qualifications include a BMus(Hons) from the University of Manchester and a PGDip from the Royal Northern College of Music. I also play with orchestras including Manchester Camerata and the Northern Chamber Orchestra, as well as being an extra player for the BBC Philharmonic and Opera North orchestras. I was a member of Southbank Sinfonia 2011.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been teaching the violin privately throughout my university and college student years. I was also a string tutor for Rochdale Youth Orchestra.
- How much do you charge?
- My rates are £26 per hour and £15 per half hour. If I have to travel to get to the lesson, I charge £30 per hour to cover the travel costs.
- Where do you teach?
- I teach from my home which is in Upminster, Essex/Havering, just a short walk from the underground station. Upminster is on the district line and very easy to get to on the overground train from central London. I can also travel to your home, provided it is accessible by public transport.
- When are you available?
- Due to my being a freelance musician, I am extremely flexible. If for whatever reason I am unable to teach on a particular day of the week I will always endeavour to make up for this on another day/evening.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- All ages and standards are very welcome!
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I would be happy to prepare pupils for all ABRSM grades. However, not all students are interested in taking exams and simply want to learn the violin, and this is also fine!
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes I do.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I studied at the Royal College of Music Junior Department with Iwona Boesche before studying with Julia Hanson at the University of Manchester. Whilst at the RNCM I studied with both Steven Wilkie and Pavel Fischer (previously in the Skampa Quartet).

Avoiding playing-related muscle tension
Playing the violin is, and should be an enjoyable experience. However, for some it can lead to muscle tension and repetitive strain injury (RSI) if not taught properly, with outcomes such as having to give up the violin altogether. I feel very strongly about this subject as I know that any playing injuries can be avoided by teaching...
Remember why you first started playing!
Many people who play a musical instrument are drawn to it because of a particular event or experience; I remember as a young child a memorable concert where Sarah Chang played the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and from that moment on I was transfixed! However, it is easy to become ‘bogged down’ in the formalities of practising, and the...
