About Elizabeth

- What kind of experience do you have?

I am a highly qualified and experienced classroom teacher, having taught in some of York's top independent schools for many years, and I also have significant experience of tutoring individual students at all levels.

A level:
I have taught AS and A2 English Literature (OCR and AQA) and the Literature aspect of A2 English Language and Literature (Edexcel). I have also taught AS and A2 Drama and Theatre Studies (AQA).

GCSE (foundation and higher tiers):
I have taught iGCSE English Language and English Literature, GCSE English (OCR, WJEC and AQA), GCSE English Language (OCR and AQA) and GCSE English Literature (OCR, WJEC and AQA) as well as examining for OCR, AQA and CIE. (I can teach to any syllabus, however.)

I have given private tuition to students of all ages including mature students requiring help at all educational levels. I have also tutored English Literature undergraduates and PGCE students (Primary and Secondary) and provided help for students needing to learn the skills and exam techniques required for the Literacy Key Skills Test.

I believe that study and revision skills are incredibly important and always teach them alongside academic subjects.

As a Housemistress I have several years of experience of pastoral care and am empathetic and sensitive to my students as individuals.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

i have an up-to-date DBS and am happy to show it to any tutees/parents on request.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I trained as a secondary English teacher at the University of York. I attend regular professional development courses and training days with the BSA and exam boards.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a Member of The Tutors' Association (MTA) and ATL.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I currently have tutees preparing for 11+, 13+, GCSE, iGCSE, AS and A2. Their goals are as individual as they are and I am thoroughly enjoying working to help them achieve them!

I have taught English and worked in boarding for over a decade and have tutored privately for several years. I am passionate about Literature and love working with and inspiring young people; tutoring is therefore hugely satisfying and enjoyable!

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach English and English Literature.

I believe that learning should be fun and that everyone has the capacity to enjoy language, novels, poetry and plays. I aim to help all students set themselves ambitious but realistic goals, whether that is to read aloud confidently, pass GCSE English or get an A* in A level English Literature, and then to meet those goals and go on to face new challenges with positivity and determination. Recent pupil success stories include one who was predicted a G at GCSE English but achieved a C grade after only half a term's tuition with me, and several who have achieved A* grades at A level English Literature.

I am a strong believer in working with my students' strengths while challenging them to improve areas of weakness in a supportive and friendly manner. As well as the syllabus required I also teach the study skills students need to continue their learning between lessons.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a Masters in English Literature from the Open University and a BA (Hons) and PGCE from The University of York. During my MA I focused on Colonial Literature and as part of my BA I particularly enjoyed studying Anglo-Saxon and Milton.

I also have a Professional Development Certificate (HE3) in Boarding Welfare, Pastoral Care and Boarding Management from the Boarding Schools Association (BSA), awarded by the University of Roehampton.

- How much do you charge?

Per hour, I charge £40 for Key Stage 3 and entrance exams, £50 for GCSE and £60 for A level. If I need to travel there is a 45p per mile charge.

- Where do you teach?

I teach online and at my home and do sometimes travel if students are unable to travel to me. Local areas I can get to include York, Haxby, Wigginton, Easingwold, Thirsk, Boroughbridge, Ripon, Ampleforth, Stillington, Helmsley, Leeds, Harrogate, Selby, Cawood and Brayton.

- When are you available?

I am available on weekdays and weekends and I also work during school holidays and half terms. I regularly tutor students who are not in the UK and am happy to work across time-zones!

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I mainly teach 11+, 13+, i/GCSE and A level students, although I have also taught primary age students in the past.

As well as offering tuition sessions of one, two or three hours on a regular basis, I offer intensive day and two day long courses to pupils preparing for exams. These are during half terms and school holidays and are one on one. Please enquire for further details.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I prepare students for the 11+, 13+, GCSE, iGCSE, AS and A2 exams.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I use a combination of Skype, Scribbler and Google Drive to achieve an optimal learning environment. All of these are free for tutees to use, although you may find you would like a comfortable headset. A drawing tablet such as those made by Wacom can also be useful, but is not strictly necessary. If you do decide to get one, the Draw model is fantastic for annotation.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

If you're looking for a tutor then you've already shown that you are willing to put in the work needed to improve your subject knowledge and skills - so, well done! I look forward to being able to help you achieve your goals. Please get in touch and I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
