- Personal Message
- Hello! I am Emma Clayton, an experienced private tutor who teaches music with a professional and creative manner. If you wish to begin an extremely rewarding passtime, please read on!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach Clarinet, Saxophone (Classical and Jazz), Recorder, Music Theory and Piano (for beginners). Theory can be taught alongside instrumental lessons or as a seperate subject. If you wish to explore Theory in a more informal way, you can try my exclusive private courses How to Read Music and Creative Composing. I also run a small, friendly ensemble for musicians of all ages. Anybody Grade 2 standard or above, who plays any Woodwind, Brass, String, Percussion and Keyboard instrument, are very welcome to attend an informal audition for Fusion Ensemble!
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have Grade 8 Clarinet, Grade 6 Music Theory and am working towards Grade 7 Piano. I am self-taught to Grade 8 standerd on Saxophone. Also B.A. Joint Honours Degree in English and Music (2.1)
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have 7 years teaching experience, privately and at the Birches Head Music School and the Amadeous Music Academy. So far I have entered 33 pupils for exams through ABRSM, most of which have achieved very high pass marks with some obtaining Merits and Distinctions.
- How much do you charge?
- Lessons are £12 per half hour and there are discounts available if you book in blocks of 4 or more. If you book a block of 10 you also get 2 free lessons! i do not intend to raise my prices during recession. Gift vouchers are also available. Fusion Ensemble sessions cost £14 for 5 sessions (Under 18 years) and £17 for 5 sessions (Adults).
- Where do you teach?
- I am based permanently in Stoke-on-Trent and teach at home in Lightwood (close to Longton), convenient to get to off the A50. There is a private music room with a piano for lessons and I also have a comfortable waiting area available for use. Fusion Ensemble is at a teaching centre in Birches Head.
- When are you available?
- Lessons are available Mon, Thurs and Fri, 2.00pm-6.00pm, Wed, 9.00am-12.00pm.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- My current pupils are aged between 6 and 78! All ages and abilities are welcome. Learn for pleasure or take the exam route, it's up to you! If you wish to take exams I teach both the standard and the Jazz ABRSM syllabuses.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- In addition to instrumental lessons, I am able to help students with instrumental parts for their GCSE and A Level Music recital pieces. Also, if anybody is working on a composition I am very happy to assist!
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I had a part time job in a Primary School so I do have a CRB disclosure certificate.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I studied Clarinet with Michael Thorley (previously Director of Music in Performance for the City Music School), from school until university. I was also a member of the City Youth Wind Orchestra for many years. (Untill I was no longer a youth!) My Degree was at The Manchester Metropolitan University, Crewe and Alsager Faculty where I studied under Grahame Shrubsole, Martin Blaine and Kevin Malone (an American composer). I am studying piano with Pauline Hardwick at present.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- I have quite a mixture of students. These include an elderly gentleman learning some of the jazz tunes he has wanted to play for years, a little boy learning piano and music for the first time and two pupils who started their playing from gift voucher Birthday presents. I also teach another elderly gentleman through the exam route, proving that it is never too late to start!
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- Have fun with your music! Learning an instrument is a very rewarding passtime.
