- Personal Message
- Hello. I'm an approachable tutor with a passion for my subjects. I have a Literature BA from Cambridge and an MA in Creative Writing. I love working with students on comprehension and essay writing, whether for Primary, GCSE, A Level or University.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- My background is in English literature and writing. I studied English Literature through to Bachelors degree level at Cambridge and then took a Masters in Scriptwriting (involving storytelling, creative writing etc) so I primarily teach English. I am familiar with the 11+ requirements and GCSE and A Level syllabus. I also teach essay writing, as I know this can be an area where students can lack confidence at any age and in any subject. For younger students, I teach Maths. I also tutor Fine Art up to GCSE, and Media Studies for GCSE and above.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a BA in English Literature from Cambridge University (2:1) and a Masters with Distinction in Scriptwriting (for Film). I studied Maths and Art to A Level.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I've tutored students of all ages from primary school to post-graduate. Aside from tutoring many students since leaving university, I have organised and run an arts class for children 11-15 years. I also worked with a charity using the arts to educate and inspire young homeless people.
- How much do you charge?
- I generally charge £30-40 per hour. If I have to travel particularly far I may charge an extra £5 for expenses.
- Where do you teach?
- I'm generally based around Archway and Crouch End, but can tutor many places in North London (Finsbury Park, Holloway, Highgate, Angel, Islington). Please get in touch and let me know where would suit you.
- When are you available?
- I am very flexible and can tutor on weekdays after school and any time in the day during school holidays.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- For English, I teach all ages from Key Stage 2 through to university and adult education. The best thing to do is get in touch with me and we can have a chat about your individual needs.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- 11+
GCSE English
AS and A Level English
Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees in any subject where essay writing is required - Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I have had a CRB check but it is no longer up to date.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- Many of my students now work with me via email. Students can send me essays or other work via email and I will return feedback the same way. THis is a good way of working on structure, strength of argument and ideas, though it can be worth an initial meeting to discuss essay content. Rates still apply as £30 per hour. I keep track of time spent reading work and providing feedback and charge accordingly. Generally feedback on a 1500-2000 word essay take around an hour so will cost £30.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- I currently tutor a wide range of students. I have two families preparing their children for the 11+ exam a year or so in advance. I teach them English and Maths, focusing on the Key Stage 2 syllabus and supplementary writing and comprehension exercises likely to come up in the 11+ exam.
I have an A-Level English Literature student with whom I am working on Shakespeare coursework, a GCSE student studying Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and completing Creative Writing coursework.
I currently have students with whom I work on essay writing. One is in year 8 and we are working on building writing confidence, and one is a post-graduate MA student, with whom I am working on essay structure, vocabulary and argument.
I also have a young art student, aged only 7 and quite a prodigy. We are working on taking their talent the next level, looking at light and shading and perspective to make drawn objects look three dimensional, and expanding into mixed media. - Do you have a personal message for students?
- I am very easy-going and approachable, and in my tutoring sessions, no question is wrong or stupid. I aim to help you play to your strengths and hopefully help you find the fun and interest in your work.

The Art of Essay Writing
Essay writing can seem like a nightmare. All those thoughts jumbled up in your head. Somewhere in there you had a point, or was it lots of points. Oh dear. Better go watch some TV. The key to writing a good essay is structure. And the secret to structure is a good plan. If you're in an exam situation, this may seem like a waste of valuable...

My Testimonials

Emma has been providing English tutorials to my daughter Ella who is currently in Year 8. She has both engaged Ella (which is not easy!) and given her confidence in her work so that she has risen two grades to become one of the highest achievers in her class. Emma has also been very flexible either helping her plan and think about her set homework, or providing material to stimulate discussion. Ella very much enjoys the hour she spends with Emma each week now - I would highly recommend her! - Carmel Sher, Crouch End |

Emma is a wonderful teacher, with the most engaging manner and an amazing ability to connect with every child according to his or her unique talent and ability. She has a way of challenging her students and yet being very patient and encouraging. Because of her warm personality, she makes the dullest of subjects interesting so that my children genuinely look forward to her classes! It’s been great having her as a teacher and I’m very pleased with the progress my children are showing. - Ayesha Rehman, mother of two (ages 7 and 9) being tutored in English, Maths and Art |

Emma is really friendly and encourages me to talk through my ideas to ensure they are perceptive and detailed. Both my expression and my grades have significantly improved. - Hana Zahia Mamma, A Level Student, Crouch End |

I've learned so much working with Emma! Her coaching has greatly increased my confidence and writing skills, and prepared me for my first university exams. Working online via email was great. Emma was always willing to work with my schedule and needs. I felt like I was communicating with an old friend because she was so pleasant and encouraging! She coached me on how to plan timed essays, encouraging me to go deeper and engage further with an argument. I would wholeheartedly recommend Emma! - Anna Morton, California, studying English Literature Fouondation at Goldsmiths, University of London |

Our kids (ages 9 and 7) have been learning English, Maths and Art from Emma. Our daughter is preparing for the 11+ but both our children learn art with Emma, and their drawing skills have improved markedly. Emma has given them a good sense of light and perspective which they have been able to translate in various portraits and still-life drawings. Emma is furthermore very enthusiastic and the kids are always keen to spend time with her and to learn from her. We cannot recommend her strongly enough. - Zahid Rehman, East Finchley |
