About Jennifer
- What kind of experience do you have?
Bespoke Tuition
I have recently worked with a prestigious private tutoring agency in Hong Kong, with children undertaking entrance exams to well respected Hong Kong schools.
Bishop Challoner School
November - Present
I am currently working as a tutor at Bishop Challoner, providing one to one tuition for GCSE students from low socio-economic backgrounds, with joint aims of improving their grades and encouraging students to aspire to further education.
I also provide classroom support to teachers, and learning resources for students with a range of learning disabilities and behavioural issues. I am currently being trained by a member of the English department to accurately mark GCSE English papers, and am currently helping to mark students controlled assessments.
AFESIP, Laos
June-September 2013
As part of my internship with AFESIP I provided English language classes to beneficiaries and Lao speaking members of staff. One of the most challenging aspects of this was creating lesson plans that could account for the fact that many of my tutees suffered from acute emotional trauma, and as such lesson plans had to be flexible to accommodate their needs. Another difficulty was lack of a shared language, which I overcame by thinking creatively about how I communicated my lessons, using body language and pictures.
Despite these difficulties, one of my pupils, a beneficiary of AFESIP's work, reached a level of English that enabled her to progress on to formal schooling.
ELATT centre for Refugee and Migrants
At ELATT I provided English Language classes to refugee and migrant women. Challenges included creating lesson plans suitable for women from multiple linguistic and cultural backgrounds, however providing one to one support for those with very little English and running debates around issues of religion, immigration and culture among those more fluent overcame this issue. The scheme was judged a success by ELATT staff because of the numbers of women who consistently opted to participate throughout the year.
