- A patient and understanding teacher, I offer private violin tuition to pupils of all ages and abilities.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach the violin to pupils at all levels, from complete beginner through ABRSM grades 1-8.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I have a first class MusB (Hons) from the University of Manchester, and I currently hold the Gladys Bratton, Montague Cleeve and TCM Trust Scholarships at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. I am also an orchestral player and play with the Amadeus Orchestra, Shadwell Opera, Orion Orchestra and Manchester Consort, and have toured around the UK, Europe and China.
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have over six years teaching experience; starting as a teaching assistant with Margaret Engering, I have developed a supportive and compassionate approach inspired by the Suzuki method.
- How much do you charge?
- £30 per hour lesson. A small extra fee is charged if I am travelling to the student's home.
- Where do you teach?
- I teach from my flat in Camberwell, a 3 minute walk from Denmark Hill railway station (with a direct line to Victoria and London Bridge). Lessons can be taught at the pupil’s home although this will incur a small additional fee to cover travel costs.
- When are you available?
- As a freelance violinist with a flexible schedule I am able to teach during the week and on weekends. If I am unable to teach on a particular day I will be able to make that lesson up later in the week whenever possible. I am also able to teach throughout school holidays.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach students of all ages and abilities, from beginner to Grade 8.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I can prepare pupils for ABRSM exams grades 1 - 8 and for scholarship entry exams, however I do not pressure my pupils to take exams as some want to learn the violin for pure enjoyment without the stress of exams.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- No, as I have always taught privately, but can obtain if required. Parents are more than welcome to sit in on lessons.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I trained with Hilary Sturt at the Royal College of Music junior department, Clare Dixon of the BBC Philharmonic, and Clare Thompson at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
- I currently have students of varying ages, the youngest is 7 years old and the oldest is in their mid-fifties.

Use your ears
Growing up under the Suzuki method of violin tuition, my teacher was forever telling me to "use my ears"; a skill I now encourage in all my students. Though the purist Suzuki method may rely somewhat too much on the ears and not enough on sight, the ability to play and learn with those two things on the side of your head is absolutely...

Frederick is a great teacher, calm and patient. He takes you step-by-step through the learning and is always encouraging. I started as a beginner and Frederick has inspired me to carry on learning to play the violin. - Carmel Roche |
