About Peter

- What kind of experience do you have?

My mother was an avid music teacher, and I took her piano lessons with children aged 6-15 when she could not. I have plenty of experience working with children, from growing up in a big family with 7 siblings, to guiding children aged 8-16 in groups on different instruments as a conductor. I also carried out a small 5 minute workshop on the horn at a family day during the Clandeboye music festival in Belfast in 2011, which generated a lot of positive feedback from the families present.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I do not, but I see no problem in getting one in the future if needs be.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I learned recorder with my mother, Marion Ryan, piano with Peter Dains, and French Horn with Ian Dakin and now with Jeffrey Bryant, who are all top-class teachers

I am an Irish first year music performance student studying French Horn at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, one of the top music conservatoires in Europe, with experience of working with children from 5-18

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach the French Horn, Piano and Recorder

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have achieved Grade 8 ABRSM distinction on the horn, and am studying on scholarship, generously supported by the Music Students Hostel Trust at the Guildhall, under Jefrey Bryant. I have been playing the horn for almost eight years and have been a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, Irish Youth Wind Ensemble, and most recently toured with the European Youth Orchestra during their Spring tour 2013.
I studied piano for thirteen years under Peter Dains and achieved a Grade 7 ABRSM distinction.
I studied recorder for four years under my mother, who still runs a music programme at my primary school in Rathmines in Dublin, where she has set up the St. Louis Wind and Symphonic Ensemble, an ensemble of about forty students aged 8-16, which I conducted for two years before moving to London.

- How much do you charge?

I charge a fee of £20 per lesson, because of my lack of professional experience, but which may increase after a significant number of years and an increase in standard, if seen fit by myself and the customer.

- Where do you teach?

I will usually charge for any additional time/expenses for any lessons outside of Zone 3 London. Local areas/places of work for me at the moment are City of London, Old Street, Hoxton, Hackney, Shoreditch, Stratford, Leyton, Leytonstone, Walthamstow, Mile End, Bethnal Green, Bow, Queensway, Royal Oak, Bayswater, Paddington, Lancaster Gate, Upper Holloway, Finsbury Park, Tufnell Park, Manor Park, Wanstead.

- When are you available?

During the week my availability varies, due to college engagements and outside work, although I am usually free on two or three days during the week and for all of the weekends and presently during all the holidays, including Summer 2013, except for two or three weeks when I will return to Ireland, tbc.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach beginners of all ages, but usually children aged 5-16. I do not recommend learning the horn before 9 years of age, but the recorder is a good stepping stone towards the horn. Piano can start as early as 5 years old.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I would like to prepare my students for ABRSM exams, youth orchestra auditions, and college entrance auditions
