- Personal Message
- I am a Live Drum and Bass specialist, but I play in many other styles of music as a session musician. My playing has inspired my teaching and vice versa. Drumming is my life and my privilege to share.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I teach Drum Kit, and all aspects of Kit Drumming from playing your first rhythm to advanced stick control, foot technique and full body co-ordination.
I do not teach theory and reading as a separate subject, I use them both and teach them as part of the complete experience of learning to play the instrument and realising the learners full potential. This way reading is not a dry and daunting separate subject, but an integral part of the communication used to teach and learn the practical and fun aspects of playing and performing. - Tell me about your qualifications.
- I am a self taught musician. My degree is in Engineering, but my teaching qualification is music specific. Instrumental Music Facilitator 2000
- What kind of experience do you have?
- I have been a musician for nearly twenty five years, and I have been a professional drum tutor for the last eleven years. I spent seven years as the full time Drum teacher for a well known Yorkshire Performing Arts College. I have played, taught and run workshops in the UK, Europe and America. I have played a wide variety of different musical styles, ranging from Rock and Blues to Reggae, World music and Samba to Jungle and Drum 'n' Bass, in many different settings from corporate events to sharing billing with legends such as Nina Simone, Gary Moore, Van Morrison and Booker T, in my blues days. More recently playing live Drum and Bass I have supported Pendulum, Skream and Prime Cuts Scratch Perverts, with Live d'n'b outfit Hayashi.
- How much do you charge?
- £30 per hour individual lesson. Fee reduced to £25 per hour for block bookings of ten or more lessons. Large discount for group tuition, negotiable. Travel expenses will be charged for home tuition visits.
- Where do you teach?
- I teach at home in Leeds in my fully equipped recording/teaching studio. I also do home visit tuition, I am prepared to travel to surrounding towns in West Yorkshire, Bradford, Dewsbury, Wakefield, Castleford, Harrogate, are all within range, subject to travel expenses, I will travel up to 20 miles.
- When are you available?
- I try to make myself available to accommodate the needs of my pupils. There are occasions as a musician when I am unavailable due to touring commitments, but these can be negotiated when necessary.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach all ages. I have taught primary school children their first rhythms, and seasoned drummers to improve their technique.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I have taught Rockschool from Grade 1 up to 8 with an exceptional Distinction, Merit and Pass rate.
- Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- Yes
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
- I can tutor via Skype if it is called for.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- For the drums: On the road and in the woodshed until I met Paul Smith, a consummate professional and teacher.
My Teaching Qualification: Access to Music Blackburn College. - Tell me about some of your current students.
- I am currently teaching in a primary school where some pupils are just starting out and some are starting to flourish. I have private pupils of whom one is a mature beginner who has just decided to start playing at 30 and another who has been playing 20 years and has come to me to increase his speed and fluidity around the kit.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
- Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect, so do it right get the right teacher.

Programmed Rhythms: a Self Improvement Scheme
My personal specialism on the drums is playing Drum and Bass and Jungle. For those of you who are not familiar with the musical genres, it is music which started out with DJs taking break beats from artists such as James Brown (the funky drummer loop) speeding them up, and using them as the rhythmical foundation for bass heavy dance...
