Hi, I'm a London based guitarist looking for some students! Your first lesson is absolutely free, a chance for us to meet and for you to get an idea of my teaching style.
Which subject(s) do you teach?
Guitar - rock, pop, funk, various african styles, classical and jazz for beginners, this can be mixed in with music theory, composition, harmony, analysis etc.
Students can choose whether they wish to learn with written music or not.
Tell me about your qualifications.
I have recently completed a degree in Music & Linguistics at the School of Oriental & African Studies, University of London, where I specialised in various styles of African music. I have studied Congolese guitar with master congolese guitarist Burkina Faso Mboka Liya, jazz guitar with incredible jazz guitarist Chris Montague, jazz performance and composition under Ricky Mian at the WAC Weekend Art's College in Belsize park, classical guitar with master Greek Cypriot musician and orchestra leader Michaealakis Michaeloudis. I studied Cuban music intensively for a month in Cuba, and studied Mande West African music intensively over a month in Senegal and Mali.
What kind of experience do you have?
I have 7 years of experience performing and recording with a massive variety of groups and in a whole load of different styles, taking in funk, folk, hip-hop, jazz, afrobeat, soukous, rock, pop, reggae, and more.

In terms of recording work - I have written for and recorded with the following groups -

Something Simple - soul jazz fusion stewpot!

Wara - contemporary Afro-Cuban-London mash-up, on Movimientos Records.

FUR - all-live UK hip-hop bomb-drop!

I have also written for and recorded on work for the photographer/filmaker Rankin, specifically for his Hungertv.com online magazine, done session recording work for various projects such as the 'Red Majestics' studio Afrobeat supergroup, and the 'Afrodizzie' studio contemporary afrobeat project.

Music has so far given me the opportunity to perform at festivals such as Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Big Chill, and Cloud Cuckoo Land. I have also had the pleasure of performing at London venues such as Ronnie Scott's, The Hackney Empire, Cargo, the Jazz Cafe, 93 Feet East, The Bloomsbury Theatre, The Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre, Passing Clouds, Brixton's Hootenanny, Jamm, Plan B and more.
How much do you charge?
£20 an hour if at my house, £25 an hour if I need to travel to you.
Where do you teach?
Can teach either at my home in Dalston or at students' homes.
When are you available?
Very flexible with availability - most daytimes and evenings are possible.
Which ages and levels do you teach?
Any ages, beginners to intermediates.
Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
Not currently.
Do you belong to any professional organisations?
Musician's Union, Perfoming Right's Society.
Do you have a personal message for students?
My aim is to teach you in way that allows you to carry on teaching yourself and learning, in the time between lessons, rather than simply completing tasks that are set, without understanding the concepts behind them. In this way music will become a source of joy and creativity!
