About Iain

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have a wide range of experience from chamber and solo recitals to orchestral performance. I regularly freelance in London working with: London Contemporary Orchestra (Principal), English Touring Opera (Co-Principal), the Aurora Orchestra (Co-Principal), London Symphony Orchestra (Freelance), Philharmonia, Southbank Sinfonia (member 2011) and the London Philharmonic Orchestra's Foyle Future Firsts Apprenticeship Scheme for 2011/2012.
In 2008 I co-founded the Artas Ensemble, a dynamic string chamber ensemble led by BBC Young Musician of the Year Winner and current BBC New Generation Artist, Jennifer Pike. Next year the Ensemble have it's Edinburgh debut as part of the prestigious New Town Concert Series.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes I am fully CRB registered as of September 2011.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I began my studies at a young age at the Junior School of the RSAMD with Tim Paxton and Robert Irvine. I then moved to London to embark on my studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, completing an Undergraduate Bachelor and Postgraduate Masters in Music with Head of Strings Louise Hopkins.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of: Southbank Sinfonia, Philharmonia, London Philharmonic Orchestra FFF Apprenticeship Scheme, London Contemporary Orchestra, Arensky Chamber Orchestra, Artas Ensemble.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I teach a doctor who recently completed his grade 5 after just one year's tuition.

Music is a great way to enrich your life. Get involved!

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach the Cello at all levels, although the majority of my pupils were beginners when they came to me. I am also proficient in teaching all aspects of harmony and musicianship and can teach theory for grades.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a Bachelor of Music Honours degree from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and also a Masters in Music and Performance from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Whilst at Guildhall I studied with the Head of Strings Louise Hopkins.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £35 for a lesson (usually an hour but more if my schedule allows and the student has prepared well!)
I also teach theory and musicianship at £20 an hour. This can supplement a students learning and help the student to get over the Grade 5 theory barrier.

- Where do you teach?

I prefer to teach from home as I have a superb teaching space with marvellous accoustics, although I am happy to travel to pupils also.

- When are you available?

I am fairly flexible on scheduling lessons although generally I arrange lessons on a week to week basis.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages and levels from beginner to advanced. I tend to teach mostly adults through the tutor pages although I teach at a Saturday morning academy at the William Ellis School in North London.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I prepare students for ABRSM and Guildhall/Trinity Grades, however normally I only use them as a loose structure, preferring to find pieces that will supplement the technical and musical abilities of each individual student.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Taking up an instrument is a great way to engage your mind. Whether you are young or old, the enjoyment and reward of being able to 'join in' and make music with others is immensely satisfying.
