- Personal Message
- I am a very enthusiastic and dedicated piano teacher and I enjoy helping my students to progress, gain confidence, and enjoy playing new music.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
- I am happy to teach Classical and Jazz piano, as well as Theory, from approximately Grade 2 up to Grade 8 level. I teach quite a few complete beginners already in school so am now looking to take on private students who have been playing for at least 12 months.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
- I completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Secondary Music) at the Institute of Education, University of London, in 2010.
I was awarded a First Class Honours music degree from Goldsmiths College, University of London, in 2007, which included advanced Classical performance.
I passed ABRSM Grade 8 Piano with Distinction, in 2003. - What kind of experience do you have?
- I teach piano lessons to around 10 students privately. As a newly qualified teacher, I have taught music classes in secondary schools. Through my work with Richmond Music Trust, I have been teaching keyboard lessons one day a week in a primary school in Richmond borough since September 2011. As of January 2012, I have been offered two additional days of teaching piano lessons; in a high-achieving girls secondary school via the Trust, and also in an independent boys preparatory school.
In addition, I am a keen jazz pianist and I play regularly in a jazz trio/quartet at venues in Notting Hill and for private functions. - How much do you charge?
- I currently charge £30 an hour.
If I am asked to teach in a student's home more than 5 miles from where I live, I may ask for a small amount to cover travel expenses. - Where do you teach?
- I am willing to teach students in their homes if they live locally.
- When are you available?
- I am available to teach lessons during the week after finishing teaching in schools, from around 4pm.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
- I teach a range of ages, including primary school children with my work for Richmond Music Trust and mainly secondary age students privately, but I have also taught adult students.
I'm very approachable in the way I teach. I think this is important so as to build up a good rapport and make the lessons enjoyable for everyone. Having completed Grades 1-8 myself, I understand the exam requirements for the Associated Board exams and feel confident taking on more advanced students, as well as beginners. - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
- I have high expectations of my students and would help them to set and achieve their goals. I always try to encourage my students to look at the finer details in a piece of music, emphasising the importance of articulation and varied dynamics to make a piece sound beautiful and expressive. Encouraging good habits, such as maintaining a good sitting posture and playing with the correct fingerings, is also important.
Currently I have students studying for the ABRSM Prep Test and Grades 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. - Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
- I have an up-to-date CRB issued on 23 August 2011 for my work with Richmond Music Trust.
- Where and with whom did you train?
- I studied Classical piano with Andrew Zolinsky and Tanya Ursova at Goldsmiths.
At Birmingham Conservatoire, where I completed one year of a Graduate Dipolama in Jazz, I was taught by Liam Noble and Mike Williams. - Do you have a personal message for students?
- Anyone can be great at music, as long as you want to express your feelings and are prepared to spend time improving your playing technique and have lots of patience. The journey will be exciting, surprising and rewarding!

A Study into Key Stage 3 Solo Improvisations
Solo Improvisations at Key Stage 3 (Year 9) We have work to do as teachers and professors in teacher training institutions to figure out how to balance structure and freedom in our classrooms in order to motivate and inspire students to be free thinkers and improvisers in a way that will serve them for a lifetime (Hickey, 2009: 296).
