Interview

Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Clarinet, Saxophone and Music Theory.

Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a first class BMus(Hons) degree, Postgraduate Diploma and an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma, all from the Royal College of Music, London.
I achieved Grade 8 distinction in Clarinet, Saxophone, Piano and Music theory while at school.

What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching for 8 years, privately and in schools. I am currently Clarinet and Saxophone teacher at Hockerill Anglo European College and have also held the same position at St. Thomas of Canterbury RC School and for the John Lewis music service.

How much do you charge?
For a 1 hour lesson I charge £35 and for a 45 minute lesson I charge £30. 45 minutes is the minimum length of time I teach. I do also teach a combined theory and practical lesson for £60 which is 1 hour 45 minutes long.

Where do you teach?
I teach at my house in Central West London (Closest tube stations are West Kensington and Barons Court. Closest overground station is West Brompton and on bus routes 74, 430, 319, 211, 295) I also travel and have a car so can travel to the surrounding areas of Central London, West, South West and North West London.

When are you available?
I am free to teach during the day, evening and weekends and at school holidays depending on other engagements.

Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach all ages from 8 years up to 70 and older! I teach all levels from beginner through to advanced diploma level.

Do you have an up-to-date CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure certificate?
I have a current CRB Check certificate from 2 schools.

Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am Principal Clarinet of the New European Ensemble (The Hague, Netherlands) as well as freelancing as an orchestral and chamber musician and a concert and concerto soloist. I freelance with many of the professional orchestras and ensembles in the UK and Europe, including the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Where and with whom did you train?
I trained at the Royal College of Music, London from 2002-2008. I studied with Andrew Marriner (London Symphony Orchestra), Barnaby Robson (Philharmonia Orchestra), Tim Lines (ex London Symphony Orchestra and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra), Janet Hilton (Head of woodwind, RCM) and on Saxophone, Kyle Horch and James Rae.

Tell me about some of your current students.
I am currently teaching students studying for exams and just for fun. My students play in wind orchestras and amateur orchestras in London and the surrounding areas and are studying for ABRSM exams ranging from Grade 1 to Grade 8. I have a 100% pass rate with ABRSM exams.

Beginner Instruments

When advising on what to get for a first instrument, I would suggest that a Buffet B12 Clarinet is a great starting instrument that would take you up to Grade 5 standard. As for reeds, I like my students to play on Vandoren reeds, starting with a strength 1.5 for complete beginners.
